As part of their Remembrance week, Mordiford school has delivered a number of thought provoking activities for the children.

The week began when the school choir and the Mordiford Community choir sang as part of the British Legion service at St George's church, Woolhope. Children from the choir read the names of the fallen during this very moving service.

Over the days that followed children participated in workshops from Discover History who, in period dress, talked to the pupils about life in the trenches and the significance of the poppy.

Lugg class went on an adventure into town and laid a poppy on the memorial.

On the Tuesday, they all went into Holy Rood church for the remembrance service. After the silence the youngest and oldest pupils laid a wreath by the memorial and Year 6 pupils read the names of the fallen from the parish. The Year 6 pupils have also researched the names on the memorial to find out more about the men.

The school choir performed as part of a massed choir in Hereford Cathedral as part of the remembrance service 'words and music' alongside Hereford Cathedral choirs and other primary schools.

On Thursday, Year 5 and 6 went to Whitecross High school to visit their First World War trench.

Friday ended the week with everyone wearing read, white and blue and holding a song-a-long of period songs with parents, grandparents and friends.

Every child in school has made a poppy from wire and modroc and then painted it red. These have then been displayed in the entrance hall along with the wonderful drawing by teaching assistant, Brenda Parrett.

It was a real team effort to work with the children to make the poppies and they were inspired by the Tower of London poppies. The children will be able to take the poppies home at the end of the month and keep them.

Head teacher, Miss Finney said, "I have been very proud of the maturity, thoughtfulness and respect the children from our youngest to oldest have shown this week. It has been a real honour to commemorate such a significant event in our history with everyone at school and see their understanding of why it is so important to remember develop".
