In 2011, a team of military historians commenced a long-term study of a unique piece of First World War battleground. Bordering the village of La Boisselle at the heart of the Somme battlefield, the sector was known to the British troops as the Glory Hole. Having lain practically undisturbed since 1918, archaeology has revealed a host of features including evidence of French, British and German occupation spanning the evolution of trench warfare. The ground was also extensively undermined, forming one of the most important and labyrinthine tunnel systems on the Western Front.

This talk will look at the history of the sector, focussing on specific wartime actions and telling the stories of men who fought and died above and below ground.

The engineering aspects of tunnelling will be discussed and a comparison made with the methods adopted by the team in re- opening and exploring the system nearly one hundred years later.

The talk is liberally illustrated with images of underground exploration and archaeology with a specific focus on those who lost their lives at La Boisselle.

There is no need to book but please confirm your attendance by e-mail so that catering can be organised.

Lingen

LINGEN HISTORY GROUP – A presentation of First World War on Film, Tuesday, 7.30pm. 2014 marks 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War. This war seems to have scarred us, perhaps because it was a war of firsts; the first tank, the first war fought in the air and the war fought by civilians in uniform, killed on a scale we could not imagine. This evening of rare archive film, not just the wallpaper seen so often on television, will examine the war from the films that have survived. Film itself was a new invention and the pictures we have are sometimes shaky and faded but capture something of the madness of trench life and film used as propaganda. We will examine some of those war stories: all from a filmic point of view, including a fragment showing the Herefordshire Regiment itself in 1914. This unique project is brought to you through a partnership with the Huntley Archives and Flicks in the Sticks, with kind funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Huntley Archive guest speaker.

For this one evening there will be a memorabilia table so please bring items along if you wish and we would welcome the loan of any relevant items to add to the collection for this occasion. A roll of honour read by Rev Preb Stephen Hollinghurst to commemorate Lingen parish war dead who gave their lives in the 1914-18 war.

Tickets are £4.50 (pay at the door).
