WHITECROSS TOWNSWOMENS’ GUILD - After the August holiday break the Guild met again on September 3. They held a short silence to remember Marion Lloyd and Ann Harris, both of whom had died during the year, and also Glyn Nicholas the husband of Mari. The summer event held in August was discussed and thanks were expressed to members from Tupsley and St Johns Worcester who also attended. The event was successful . Following the general business there was an entertaining talk by Janet Wall entitled Cooking in Private Service. The competition of a decorated small box was won by Joan Hughes and the raffle was won by June Timson. A special Macmillan coffee morning was held at the home of Maureen Price who had made cakes and other goodies in aid of this good cause. Thanks were expressed to Maureen for the work put into the event.

Having been invited to a skittles event by St Johns in Worcester in August, several members went and the star of the Whitecross team was Muriel Lindup. We had a fish and chips supper and also a few of our members won raffle prizes. It was a fun evening.

On September 22 a group went to the Radway Garden Centre and after buying plants and other things we had an enjoyable afternoon tea. Two teams from Whitecross Guild entered the quiz against Tupsley on September 16 but sadly we did not win.

PEOPLE OF HEREFORD RAISE OVER £12,000 – The people of Hereford and surrounding areas proved themselves to be very generous during Christian Aid Week back in May of this year. In response to unfolding events and wanting to help less developed communities continue their climb out of poverty, people in Hereford and its environs raised a total of £12,168 during the annual Christina Aid Week between May 11 - 17, 2014.

It is a testament to the generosity of the people in Hereford that we exceeded last year’s collection by some £900. The funds were raised in a mixture of ways, including church and house to house collections, coffee morning and lunches.

Merryn Hellier, who chairs the Christian Aid Committee and Pat Skeet who organises the distribution of envelopes and posters across Hereford said they were very pleased that people had responded so generously and were helping communities across the world with both immediate needs and long term sustainable projects.

Christian Aid has been involved with development and campaigning on issues related to world development and poverty for over 50 years and continues to be an influential force for good in many countries. For more information see christianaid.org.uk HEREFORD RAIL MALE VOICE CHOIR – The Hereford Rail Male Voice Choir has had a fantastic start to its 2014/15 season with full houses at both of its early concerts. The first concert held in the community hall in Ledbury on September 19, organised by Dolly Bevan on behalf of International Red Cross, was a complete sell-out. Over £1,000 was raised during the evening and the audience thoroughly enjoyed a varied programme of music and humour.

At the special concert organised by the choir on October 4, to raise money for Acorns Hospice, extra seating had to be laid out to cope with the audience. The evening featured the Tenby Male Choir who combined with the Hereford Rail Male Voice Choir to give a spectacular concert. Both choirs were on song, thrilling the packed church with a variety of songs and style.

Each choir provided a soloist from within their own ranks, with Bradley Langstone of the Rail Choir, singing Music of the Night from Phantom of The Opera, which had the audience breathless and resulted in a much deserved ovation. “Follow that”

was the expression used by Tenby’s MC David Blackmore. The second half introduced Paul Varallo from the Tenby Choir, who performed two songs from Les Miserables which was equally well received.

The concert was held at Holy Trinity Church on Whitecross Road, at the kind permission of the church and Prebendary Brian Chave, who also introduced both choirs. The concert was also supported by Hereford City Council.

More than £1,000 was raised on the night for the Acorns Hospice.

The Rail Choir will be performing on November 15 at St Mary’s Church in Ross-on-Wye on behalf of the Bible Society. The Richmond Club in Hereford on November 29 in aid of The Ely Memorial Fund and then on December 5 at St Paul’s Church in Tupsley in aid of church funds.

Huntington

FRIENDS OF ST THOMAS À BECKET CHURCH – It boded well when the third event of the Friends of St Thomas a Becket Church talk sold out five weeks in advance. Dr Geoff Steel, the well- known polymath of Huntington, gave a spellbinding talk on ‘Geology from Hay to Kington’ to a packed church at St Thomas à Becket, Huntington on October 4.

Using a series of stunning photos, maps and diagrams, he demonstrated how nature and man have shaped the landscape between Hay and Kington. He talked of the history of the area, linking us even to the Ice Age, and he introduced us to the pioneers of geology discovery, in particular Richard William Banks (1819- 1891) of Hergest Croft. He also assured the congregation that the future of the area was safe from fracking, much to everyone’s relief. The many Friends of St Thomas à Becket and new visitors appreciated an interval of wine and canapés in heated tents outside, where they enjoyed meeting each other. It was agreed that Dr Steel’s talk was outstanding and Lawrence Banks gave a warm vote of thanks, which was heartily endorsed by the audience.

Marden

MARDEN GARDENERS ASSOCIATION – In gardening terms this is always a busy but rather sad time of the year.

WTime is spent cleaning up, cutting back, getting more tender plants and shrubs into the greenhouse and preparing the ground for next season. However,it has been a glorious summer, weather wise, and hopefully a very productive and rewarding growing season. Time now to hunker down for the winter, enjoy cosy evenings with friends and look forward to Christmas.

At the September meeting the work of great landscape gardener Capability Brown was talked about. It is fair to say that Brown transformed English country estates and gardens from the formal layouts, copied from France and Holland, to the now quintessential English rolling landscape complete with follies, water features and tree plantations. He did, however, have a number of serious rivals who nicknamed him “Crusher Brown”, because of his destruction of many beautiful but formal gardens as he created his landscapes. If anyone wonders what a “Capability Brown” landscape looks like then try a visit to Berrington Hall on the A49 just north of Leominster. It will be well worth the effort.

The next meeting is on November 11, and will be our AGM so members are urged to make a special effort to attend. The speaker is yet to be announced. Visitors and new members to the gardening club are always very welcome. If you would like to join a taster evening, the meetings are every second Tuesday of the month in the community centre at 7.30pm.

PRESTEIGNE INVESTMENT CLUB – Once again the conversation flowed as members of Presteigne Investment Club enjoyed dinner, yet again, at one of the great local restaurants.

However, although all those present pay their £25 per month subscription and own shares in the club, the talk was of anything but the stock market. Politics and religion – those supposedly taboo subjects – were widely discussed, with supporters of every political party present. Even the owner of Knighton’s Monster Raving Loony Party’s headquarters is a member of the club. Presteigne Investment Club continues to outshine the FTSE and, although September’s losses have affected most shareholders, including club members, longer-term investors have seen their £25 monthly subscription rise significantly.

Although the club is full, interest from potential new members is welcome and a waiting list is in operation. For further details, please call the deputy secretary, Jonathan Wilson on 01544 262712.

MEMORIAL HALL – At the recent AGM of the Memorial Hall, all office holders and the committee were re-elected. The president, Evelyn Davies, paid tribute to Paul George, a member of the committee for many years, who had sadly died earlier in the year.

Paul had been responsible for many of the day-to-day repairs and decoration in the hall.

The meeting was also attended by Cllr James Tennant-Eyles. James has been the driving force behind the recent grant of £65,371 awarded by the Community Covenant Grant Scheme Board on behalf of the Royal Air Force, the Royal Navy and the British Army. The hall will soon have a new roof and new windows and doors.

Improvements are also being made to the toilets. The committee is also indebted to Jenni Thomas from Powys County Council, who suggested we apply for the grant and has since worked very hard on our behalf to help secure it.

Presteigne Players are also making improvements to the stage in time for their Christmas performance. A new tiered seating area will soon be available for use as well. The players have made a contribution to this work and are carrying out the alterations themselves.

Powys has also agreed that the old play area next to the hall can be turned into a car park for the hall.

It will hopefully be surfaced in the near future.

AUTHOR – Presteigne’s author of Letters from the Past, an historical adventure novel set during the English Civil War, is offering his readers the opportunity to win a luxurious break at Fawsley Hall Hotel and Spa; one of England’s finest Country House Hotels.

Keith J Wilson has arranged for one of his lucky readers to enjoy dinner, bed and breakfast for two nights – for two people – at the very hotel which is closest to where much of the action from Letters from the Past takes place.

Keith, who used to live in Eardisley and is now retired, has received excellent reviews of Letters from the Past which many folk consider to be one of the finest historical novels of 2014.

Entry to the competition is free.

To find out about the novel and/or how to enter, please go to www.keithjwilson.co.uk/competition or telephone 01544 262712.

Hopefully, all this work will not have too great an impact on functions in the hall and by April next year, that hall will be one that everyone can be proud of.

One of the conditions made in awarding this grant, was that a permanent display, showing military connections, was to be put up in the hall. If you have any photos, documents or memorabilia of any sort from the wars, we would be extremely grateful if we could have copies of them to put on display. If you have, please contact Frank Davies on 267370 or Lynne Owens on 267253 or owensmoor@ tiscali.co.uk or any committee member.
