NEWTOWN High School’s John Beddoes campus at Presteigne welcomed Year 5 and 6 pupils from local primary schools to the first transition day so they could have a look around the school. During the day the children took part in a variety of activities including drum lessons and how to play a large variety of percussion instruments, they made decorated Christmas trees in design technology, they played dodge ball in PE and in science they learned how to use Bunsen burners to see what type of salt was on a wooden splint after it changed colour in the heat. A group of Year 9 pupils were on hand to show the youngsters around the school and help when needed.

In the evening the campus held an open evening for the children and their parents. Everyone was welcomed to the school by head teacher Judith Pryce before they walked around the whole school visiting each department. This included the history department who turned class rooms into World War 1 information areas and staff and pupils dressed in costumes and served spam, corned beef and fish paste sandwiches as well as a selection of cakes from the era. In the Food Technology department there was a chance to see year 10 pupils baking scones and other cakes and cups of tea and coffee were served with a piece of cake.
