Ross-on-Wye Vaga Probus Club

TIM Howson retired Air Commodore, now branch secretary of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airforce Association, SSAFA, assisted by Pat Burbidge, divisional secretary for South Herefordshire, explained the charity’s work at the recent meeting of the Vaga Probus Club.

Tim took up his role on retirement in 2011, after 30 year’s service during which time he had considerable experience of the good work carried out by SSAFA.

He began by giving members of the club a potted history of the charity, which originated in 1897, at the time of the Zulu Wars.

A Major James Guildea believed that the close knit military family should help soldiers and their families who were suffering as a result of injuries.

This came to the attention of a female member of the royal family who produced two hat pins, crossed them and announced that this was to be their badge of honour, it is still retained by the present day SSAFA.

Their work increased steadily through the First World War and all conflicts since.

SSAFA provides practical and emotional support for all members who are still suffering the effects of their service.

The charity has a network of 92 local branches and 4000 volunteer case-workers who seek to solve the many different difficulties those in military service face. All of this requires funding to the tune of £12 million a year. There are continual fundraising initiatives by all concerned.

SSAFA is now under contract with the NHS to help servicemen, their families and children, particularly in cases of disability, it also helps with bereavement and break ups within families where, for instance, wives are living in barracks or military housing which is needed for incoming service personnel, stepping stone homes are now provided.

Pat Burbidge gave a summary of typical case histories illustrating where case workers dealt with the difficult situations ex-servicemen can find themselves in, from initial contact to successful conclusion.

Case-workers can be called direct, at Franklin House in Hereford, where the military charities’ help desk is situated.

They are not judgemental and co-operate with the British Legion, regimental funds, occupational charities for a combination of funds.

Quite commonly now, when service men or women are injured or severely disabled and still undergoing medical treatment or rehabilitation their families can make regular visits free of charge at Norton House.

In 2012/2013 over 580 people used the facilities at a cost of £750,000. SSAFA provides lifelong support for the forces and their families. This means that if you have ever served, or are serving in the armed forces, SSAFA is there for you and your family. SSAFA understands that time in the forces can impact on people at any time therefore they are committed to being available whenever and wherever you need them. Tim and Pat were thanked for their most informative talk and all the members now have a better understanding of the work carried out by SSAFA.
