PHYLLIS Gurney twice celebrated her 100th birthday, once with family and friends and again at the East Radnor Day Centre in Presteigne with staff and friends. At the day centre party there was some musical entertainment, Phyllis was given a large cake and everyone had a glass of bubbly to celebrate her big day. Phyllis was born near Kinnerton and after she was married worked on a farm at Upper Bailey, Llangunllo with her husband Tom. Phyllis has lived in Knighton for the last fifty years. She has two daughters and a son, two grand children and four great grandchildren.

Phyllis was driving until she was nearly 90 and loved her Austin 7 car, she was a regular visitor to Knighton Primary school, driving her daughter in law and grandchildren to school. During the celebrations her daughter-in-law Jean remembered when she was 75 and she fell off a push bike which left her black and blue. Jean said “This was a big surprise to the family as they didn’t even know she had a bike”.
