This starts with Cora Weaver’s talk on county water sources at 7.30pm tonight, the Autumn Fair itself is on Saturday at 2pm, and on Sunday a harvest festival service at 11.30am, and the bring-and-share lunch at 1pm. Children’s activities and games will keep younger folk interested while older ones can amuse themselves by learning the skills of boules, judging a photo exhibition, trying their hand at Haiku poetry, searching the book stall, discussing and following local history. Everyone will find themselves fascinated by the Owls Rescue Service, contributing to the arts and crafts stand of a consequences story, while academics will find themselves challenged by the strange guess-the-weight contest. And in the finest tradition the big bric-a-brac stall should keep the most demanding bargain hunters fully occupied. Cream teas in the gallery cafe and/ or ordering pancakes cooked to order and slaking their thirst at the bar. As usual the ever-popular home made cake and sweet stalls will supply a terrific range of top quality take-home goodies.

Bell Bank Club

MADDIE the dog is very well and celebrated her fifth birthday this year on September 5. At a recent meeting, Bronllys elocutionist, John Parry, delighted everyone when he recited many of his poems, some old and some new and some humorous too. A message of condolence has been conveyed to Sue Munday on the passing of her husband John. He had driven members on Dial-a- Ride to meetings and become a very good friend to many members. The outing for August was an afternoon tea taken at Llangoed Hall. Members arrived in warm sunshine and enjoyed a fine afternoon tea in the garden rooms. Some of the history of the building was then read and a few members had the opportunity to browse upstairs. Before leaving, a sing-a-long took place around the grand piano. It was a wonderful outing and may well be repeated in the future. The Bell Bank Club offers an opportunity for blind and partially-sighted people to get together and support each other. They meet every Thursday from 2pm-4pm in the parish hall, Lion Street, Hay-on-Wye. Contact Eileen Bufton on 01497 820897.

Bishopswood WI

THIRTY-ONE members attended the meeting on September 12. The meeting opened, as usual, with Jerusalem followed by a short business meeting chaired by Sheila Trezona, as our president, Ann Jones was unable to attend. Various events were detailed including our upcoming group supper in October, and Sheila reported on the celebrations for the WI centenary with the handing over of the baton to the Ross group at the rowing club on September 5. It had been a beautiful morning with the river looking spectacular. This was reported in the local press and had been attended by Sheila and Cicely Symonds on behalf of Bishopswood and there were a number of other members there from WIs in the Ross group. We then had a welcome cup of tea, followed by this month’s speaker – Carole Dowding with a talk entitled “A brief history of Perfume”. Carole started her talk with a brief outline of her career, starting with showjumping! She then moved on from that and became a perfume consultant for Dior, ending up as head of the trading department before finishing her career in 1999. It was really a most fascinating talk She was most entertaining and amusing. She led us through lots of facts about perfume generally: when it was first used in ancient times, through smoke, and eventually how all the oils were produced by distillation and then blended and fixed to make them last in the present day. We were surprised to find that, at one time, only men wore perfume, and also that it was not used on the body but to fragrance gloves worn by ladies to mask the smell of the urine used in tanning the leather! None of us realised also that it takes one ton of flowers to create one ounce of perfumed oil. It was a very interesting talk and enjoyed by all of us. The vote of thanks was given by Gloria Clark. The meeting closed at 8.45pm and members were reminded that the next meeting is on October 10 and will start at 2.30pm as we will be on winter hours. The speaker will be Sandra Snell, the subject flower arranging. All are welcome.

Dortsone History Society

Non- members £3. On November 5 at 8pm, Alan Brimson, the secretary of the Kilvert Society will give a talk entitled The Life and Diary of the Revd. Francis Kilvert, at 8pm.

Knighton and District Rotary Club

LAST month was another busy one and we had the added pleasure of welcoming former members Howard and Pauline Goslyn back to the club. We are very pleased to have them on board. The other highlights of the month included a visit from our Rotary district governor Sandra Townsend, who outlined her plans for this Rotary year. In the middle of the month we had a formal cheque presentation event at the Knighton Hotel with monies raised during the last Rotary year being given to a number of local charities. These included the Wales and Midlands Air Ambulances, Knighton community centre, the First Responders of Bucknell and of Knighton, community support groups of Presteigne and Knighton, among others. All details are on our website. We finished the month by having a stall at the Knighton Show to raise awareness of what we do for communities locally, nationally and worldwide. The “Guess the Mileage “and putting competitions were very popular, and we thank all those who attended for their support of our efforts. Why not find out more about us at www.knighton.rotary1150.org If you want to enjoy the company of like-minded people, and possibly get involved in what we do, come along to any of our Wednesday meetings. Leominster U3A

IN September Commander Philip Unwin gave a wonderful fact- packed history of the SS Great Britain - the Concorde of her Day. Designed by Brunel as the world’s first iron ship, she was launched in 1843 by Prince Albert in front of 100,000 spectators. After a varied career as luxury Atlantic liner, emigrant ship on the Australia run, troop ship during the Crimean War and cargo ship under sail, she finally became a floating warehouse in the Falkland Islands and was scuttled in 1937. In 1970, after a campaign of fundraising and diplomacy, she was purchased and towed on a barge back to the dock in Bristol where she had been built, to an emotional homecoming with Prince Philip on board. Her restoration has won numerous national awards, conservation relying entirely on ticket sales, 170,000 visitors enjoying the ship in 2013. Chairman Anthea Lock reminded members of the book stall at the October 21 meeting where Richard Jordan will be describing Growing up in London during the Blitz.

Marden Gardeners Association

FOR the September meeting Mr Simon Haddock treated members to a super talk entitled The Glory of Roses. Voted the best loved English plant, they are very symbolic around the world. In England there was a war for the English Crown which has become known as the War of the Roses. They are often the centre piece of paintings, are considered to be very romantic and are used extensively in medicines. Apparently they can be grown right up to the Arctic circle and vary in height from just 12 inches high to 30 foot. Most interesting was the section on disease and pest control. Simon advised a number of treatments but stressed that a well-fed, watered and cared for plant with plenty of mulch around the base, will have much greater disease resistance, much like humans really. Lots of tender loving care needed then to produce excellent displays next year. Winner of the single stem competition was Mr Stan Rawlings. The next meeting is on October 14, when the speaker will be Chrissy Ching talking about the work and gardens of that great landscape gardener Capability Brown. Chrissy is a new speaker to Marden gardeners and the group is looking forward to her presentation. Visitors and new members to the gardening club are always very welcome. If you would like to join in for a taster evening members meet every second Tuesday of the month in the community centre at 7.30pm. More information on the club and it’s activities can be obtained from the secretary, Len Day on 01432 880657. Autumn Show: What a super show this year. Obviously the good weather helped to produce record crops but the club also had a number of new people enter which was very encouraging. Last year members were excited by a record number of 150 entries but the autumn show held on September 6, recorded 177 entries all of extremely high quality. The group are not professional gardeners; just people who enjoy their gardens so it was good to hear one lady say that she did not expect to win but just really enjoyed taking part in this village event. To put on such events requires a lot of hard work so members were all delighted to see so many visitors enjoying the afternoon and staying for refreshments and a chat. Many thanks to all who helped to make the day a great success particularly to all exhibitors and the judges. This is a good, enjoyable, village event, so many thanks for your support and if you have not been to one of the gardening shows before then do come along next year. Winners for the various groups were: Vegetables and fruit 1st Reg Cotterell, 2nd Susan Price, 3rd The Dutson-Smith family; flowers 1st Carol Rawlings, 2nd Doris Stephens, 3rd Elizabeth and June Gwynn; floral art 1st Janet Lloyd, 2nd Doris Stephens, 3rd Carol Rawlings; cookery and preserves 1st Janet Lloyd, 2nd Sue Dutson/ Elizabeth and June Gwynn, 3rd Ann Simpson; Handicrafts 1st Mavis Cotterell, 2nd Sue Price/ Janet Lloyd, 3rd Brian Skinner; children’s class up to 12 years 1st Sophie Dickenson, 2nd Charlotte Bryon, 3rd Jo Stanley; children’s class 12-16 years 1st Ellie Hall. Very well done to all the winners. In some cases the judges must have had a very difficult job as all entries, especially the children’s class, were of a very high standard. There is also an uncollected photograph from the show, so if the owner can give Len Day a call he can return it to you.

Old Radnor WI

AUGUST and September have been out and about months for Old Radnor WI. On August 8 Gladestry WI invited other club members to celebrate the centenary commemorative baton passing through the area. The baton started its journey at Anglesey on January 1, 2014 - zigzagging around the country and will end at the Annual General Meeting held at The Royal Albert Hall in June 2015. It was a lovely afternoon when members met outside Old Radnor Church for photographs, attended by Rebe Brick, federation chairman, ending with a celebratory tea at Walton Village Hall. Members also went on the annual summer trip, this time it was on the Llangollen Canal. Again the weather was kind. A super lunch was enjoyed on board and a stroll round Llangollen Town later. September meeting was an afternoon at the Rhayader Dams. Visiting the visitor centre and going for afternoon tea later at The Penbont House Tea rooms run by Sandra Sanky. A super tea – cakes to melt in your mouth served in lovely surroundings. The speaker was Bryan Lawrence, a historian from Rhayader, who spoke briefly about the history of Rhayader Dams and the surrounding countryside. He was thanked by the president of Old Radnor WI. Next meeting will be an open meeting at Walton Village Hall, on October 7,at 7.30pm, where Dr Philip Cleland will be speaking about Second World War anecdotes. Everyone is most welcome to attend.

SSAFA

A LEADING military charity is urging Herefordians to “sup a cuppa for charity” next month. The Herefordshire branch of SSAFA, which supports serving and former members of the armed forces and the families, is calling on anyone who fancies a chat, a cuppa and a slice of cake to get involved in the annual Big Brew Up to help raise funds for the charity. Chairman of Herefordshire SSAFA, Air Vice-Marshal Mike Smart, said: “We’re really lucky in Herefordshire to have so many people who support this annual event. “It’s down to the friendly nature of Herefordians that they like to meet up and chat and really get behind the idea of raising a bit of cash, too, for the charity. “If you didn’t take part last year it’s great fun and an excellent excuse for a good old gossip over a cup of tea - and all in a good cause, too.” Anyone wanting to take part should visit www.thebigbrewup. org.uk to find out more imformation. SSAFA’s trained volunteers provide vital practical, emotional and financial support to thousands of people across the country. In the last year more than 80 families have been given help in Herefordshire. The charity has been helping the forces family for nearly 130 years and was the only national military charity supporting servicemen and their families when war broke out in 1914. If you think SSAFA could help you or you would be interesting in volunteering, please call 01432 273932. The Big Brew Up takes place from October 6-12.
