'INDIAN Inspirations' was the subject of Gladestry WI's well attended March meeting.

Joan Davies, from Evancoyd and a member of Evenjobb WI, has collected Indian garments and photos. The garments ranged from children's clothes to women's saris. Joan described how there were different styles for different areas of India, covering hot and cold climates. The embroidery on them was very complex and used shells, mirrors and beadwork to enhance the embroidery, sometimes using all of these on one garment. The tiny glass mirrors are sewn on within the overall pattern to protect the wearer from evil spirits.

Joan also showed members some photos of India and explained how the clothes but also the buildings, which have detailed and exquisite patterning, were a great inspiration to her.

Joan uses these for inspiration for her own embroidery on her bags and simple clothes and greetings cards.

Members were then able to examine these beautiful items (but not touch!).

Heather Barwick won the prize for a hand-knitted cushion.
