Hereford Times/Harrison Clark Employer of the Year competition winner named
HEREFORDSHIRE'S own 'top cat' pounced on a 'tip top' win in the Hereford Times/ Harrison Clark Solicitors employer of the year competition.
Claridge Nursing Homes boss Richard Claridge, affectionately given the pet name of a TV cartoon character by employees, won our contest after our judges were impressed with his nomination by a member of his staff.
"A positive team spirit is instilled through inspiration from the top, hence the appropriate pet name we call him Top Cat," said Samantha Simcock, the resource manager of Claridge Nursing Homes which operates the Lynhales Hall and Hampton Grange Nursing Homes.
"Richard instills and nurtures a ‘Confidence’ with a capital ‘C’ within his workforce as well as adding an element of fun to the work environment."
Judges were impressed by the company's investment in training.
"I have witnessed care team members successfully qualify from NVQ level one right through to NVQ level five," said Samantha.
Staff have progressed from being care assistants to care team leaders and on to become qualified registered nurses. There has been further progression to degrees in dementia care with some staff members qualifying to become care home managers.
One member of staff even embarked on an apprenticeship at the age of 60.
"She successfully progressed to gain a modern apprenticeship, including literacy and numeracy, with a NVQ level two in professional cookery," said Samantha.
Staff are rewarded for achievements, with award ceremonies, staff newsletter profiles and letters from Richard and he always reminds team leaders to thank staff at the end of each shift.
"He can even be found with the night staff helping clean up and with the ‘Henry’ hoover in his hand after the Christmas party- giving the message to staff he has a ‘hands on’ work approach," said Samantha.
The business has achieved a number of quality awards such as ISO Quality assurance, Investor in People and Gold Standards Framework.
"I'm happy to receive this award. It's not for me it's for my staff," said Richard. "To look after good staff is as easy as falling off a log. I'm blessed with a fabulous team."
Richard started his business in 1990 as a nurse ‘on the floor’ as well being the proprietor. The team has been built up from a team of 40 staff to 150.
Robert Binnersley of St Martin's Dental Practice in Hereford was the competition's runner-up.
Robert, or Bob as he is known, qualified as a dentist 45 years ago has worked in Hereford ever since.
He worked at Kyrle Street for 22 years then moved to St Martins Street in August 1989 to open his own practice. Over the next 23 years the town house evolved into a six surgery practice.
Nominees Kate Hoskins and Miriam Hibberd said: "He is an inspiration with his work ethic. No job is too big or too small for him to do. He even empties the bins and sweeps up the leaves. He is the last person to leave at night to make sure that everyone has finished and doesn’t need help."
