A HEREFORDSHIRE brewery is expanding in the face of an overwhelming tide of pub closures.

Wye Valley Brewery, based in Stoke Lacy, has purchased the Old Pelican in Gloucester with an average of 16 pubs closing every week.

Vernon Amor, managing director of Wye Valley Brewery, said: "At Wye Valley Brewery we are passionate about pubs. We believe they play an important role in our communities as they are the outlet for our national drink cask-conditioned beer.

"We are excited by the prospect of reviving the fortunes one of Gloucester’s historic pubs."

Following refurbishment the pub will sell the full range of Wye Valley Brewery beers such as HPA, Butty Bach and the Dorothy Goodbody range.
