THE manager of a Hereford jewellery store is calling it a day after a sparkling career.

Nigel Marks bid farewell to the diamonds and rubies after nearly 25 years running the city branch of F Hinds on the corner of Eign Gate.

Since Nigel started working there in 1987 he has seen plenty of changes and met more than his fair share of famous faces.

“The best person I ever met was when Norman Wisdom came into the shop,”" said Nigel, from Hampton Park, Hereford.

“I said to him ‘do you want to buy a watch?’ and he came in and bought one off me. He came back two or three times and was so polite. He had his cap on and would raise it to all the ladies in the shop.”

Led Zeppelin lead singer Robert Plant has also called in, along with 1990s pop band Eternal.

But if it’s the celebrities who have provided the glamour it is the locals who have supplied good company over the years.

Nigel’s retirement will allow him to spend more time with his two grandchildren and will also allow him to visit friends he has not seen for some time.
