THE green efforts of a Herefordshire company have been recognised with two awards at a regional contest.

The second West Midlands Low Carbon Economy Awards saw a double success for Amcor Flexibles, based in Ledbury, in both the most promising new low carbon product/service and West Midlands low carbon pioneer categories.

The company, which is one of the area’s largest employers, has worked with its customers to create a range of new packaging solutions.

These include the development of a heat-sealed flexible lidding film for Sainsburys. The lid is used to cover the supermarket’s fresh strawberries instead of the usual clip-on version and has created savings of 330 tonnes of plastic and more than 1,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

This new innovation has since been adopted by other major retailers, including Waitrose, M&S, Tesco and Asda – creating £2.4 million of new business for the firm’s portfolio.

David Darlaston, regional director of business in the community, said: “The applications we received demonstrated outstanding levels of innovation and a high quality of technical understanding which will make a great impact in our region on reducing carbon.

“It is of the utmost importance that the region embraces the carbon reduction commitment and the achievements recognised here will promote the benefits felt by companies which have made concerted efforts to run in a more efficient manner.”

The awards also featured a victory for Caplor Farm, of Fownhope, which received the carbon reduction cost saving award for companies with under 250 employees.
