A Hereford student is bringing his education up to speed by stepping into the workplace.
John Day, a 15-year-old who goes to Aylestone School, was referred to the Live and Learn programme after struggling to engage with the traditional curriculum.
His mechanical skills have been developed by training provider Motov8 at its base at Grandstand Business Centre in Faraday Road, Hereford The programme provides one-to-one support for 14 to 16-year-olds at risk of dropping out of education. After referral, students are placed onto vocational courses, such as the project run by Motov8.
This delivers weekly training sessions on motor vehicle maintenance and is designed to run alongside the school curriculum.
John joined the project in September to pursue his interest in cars. Since then he has excelled and it is hoped he will go on to achieve vocational qualifications.
He said: “This has really helped to develop my confidence and given me the motivation I need to go on and continue with further education or employment in an industry I am passionate about.”
David Finn, centre manager at Motov8, said: “The young people who are referred to us often find they are not progressing at school and need to get involved in something a bit different to succeed.”
