LEGEND has it that every bridge has a troll living under it but one example in Herefordshire has moved closer to the myth.
The Whitney Toll Bridge, at Whitney-on-Wye, has just 'acquired' its own troll to make the site more interesting for children.
“We see ourselves more as custodians of this historic monument, rather than owners," said said Maggie Taylor, who along with husband Grahame Penny, bought the bridge in January 2012.
“Our 18th Century bridge is steeped in history, which visitors just love, but we wanted to make it more interesting for kids.
“So when we discovered our very own troll Walter, or should I say that he found us, it was an ideal opportunity to make local history into a fun experience at Whitney Bridge by using the shiny pennies that Walter has collected over the years to make a Penny Hunt.”
There are 10 clues that direct children to places where the pennies are hidden within the bridge’s extensive grounds and there is a chance to learn about the history of the bridge and the area too.
The Whitney Bridge Penny Hunt is free to take part in. Participants receive a certificate to commemorate entering and a chance to be photographed with Walter in his grotto.
