Peter and Shirley from the Bulmer Foundation.
Hi, we’ve just started writing an article in the Hereford Times called ‘Cutting it a Different Way’, look out for it on the letters page.
We’d like to have a conversation about ‘sustainable development’ in Herefordshire and find out what it actually means to people.
If how we are, as individuals and as a society, is damaging the environment that supports us, then what can we do to change it?
We want to explore these issues, and for you to tell us what you think.
Cosmetic surgery has been in the national news again this week. Mintel’s UK based research revealed that 50% of women surveyed would consider plastic surgery. I found this news disturbing.....
For a sustainable future there will need to be as many young people with an understanding of ecological principles as possible.
On the 18th of January Tesco announced a number of measures that will address it’s energy use and carbon emissions. These include reducing the number of air freighted foods it sells, cutting energy use in its stores, converting its distribution fleet to 50% bio-diesel, and attempting to ‘carbon label’ all of its products....
As a member of the Bulmer Foundation Team, I often get involved in conversations about how to change systems which have become unsustainable. People seem to understand that our current systems are struggling. Ask a teacher or a nurse or a farmer and they will give you a list of what is not working. Ask them what they would like to change - their response is often one of resignation. ‘I don’t like what’s happening ……. but what can I do?
Following on with the 'consuming less' idea, I learned that a group of friends in San Francisco decided to give up shopping for a year - apart from essentials such as food, soap, medicine etc. No gadgets, mobile phones or even books. Everything would be borrowed, traded or bought second-hand... A year later over 4000 people are involved in an on-line discussion about it -(sfcompact.blogspot.com). People are concerned about over-consumption, but there are those in the States who have called the group 'un-American' and 'Economic Terrorists'. So perhaps 'reduce'is the forgotten of the three 'r's.
The EU published a report last week detailing the possible consequences that climate change will have on the continent of Europe. One thing of note in the report is the description of the environment as ‘ecosystem services’. This idea has been around for a long time in the environmental movement, by the name of ‘natural capital’...
I've got on to food this week in the paper. Once i get going on this subject I might not stop.
I've been talking about insulation this week, it was sparked off by going to visit some friends who live in a typically ancient Herefordshire home, draughts and all. They had just had some bales of 'thermafleece' delivered, made from 100% British sheepswool.
