Every year the United Nations marks the World Environment Day on 5 June. It is celebrated in over a hundred countries and aims to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire people to take action. Each year, one country is selected to host the main international events. This year it is Norway and the theme is ‘Melting Ice – A Hot Topic’.

Busy Times

Posted on 9:16am Thursday 31st May 2007

There are changes happening in my life, things that I will share with you when I next blog. They are big changes requiring a lot of attention to detail. That's all I will say for the moment, or perhaps I should say 'watch this space'.

Life Without Oil

Posted on 12:30pm Tuesday 15th May 2007

Close your eyes and imagine life without oil. Impossible? Well, according to permaculture guru Rob Hopkins we are on the threshold of ‘peak oil’- the point at which the maximum amount of oil that can be extracted globally is reached.

Change The Programme

Posted on 12:23pm Tuesday 15th May 2007

Sally Lawrence’s letter on the letters page two weeks ago, about being automatically given plastic bags even when she didn’t want them, got me thinking about habits. Habits are things we do when we’re not consciously thinking. They are like the default setting on a computer, the setting which it automatically returns to when it’s not given any other instruction.

Back to reality. . .

Posted on 5:24pm Monday 14th May 2007

We’ve been away for awhile. We spent three weeks in Florida visiting family. I stocked up on my grandbaby hugs hoping to store them up until the next time we can go and visit. While you were having lovely weather here in Hereford, we were having a few nice walks on the beach and enjoying a lazy afternoon or two by the pool. Sadly holidays don’t last nearly long enough and it was soon time to come back home.

My Walk to Work

Posted on 3:29pm Monday 30th April 2007

On Monday I decided to walk to work. My work-place, the Bulmer Foundation, is based in the heart of Bulmer’s cider plant in Hereford – my home is in Allensmore. It took an hour and a quarter – not exactly a hike but certainly more than a stroll.

Do you like hospital food

Posted on 4:17pm Friday 20th April 2007

The NHS spends 500 million a year on food and catering services. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, said “let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food” so you would imagine that food in hospital would be an important part of the overall healthcare provision. I’m afraid that, in most cases, it’s not.

Travelling!!

Posted on 4:30pm Tuesday 10th April 2007

Hello out there!! Is anyone still blogging? I was away for a week and came back to see no new blogs posted and since I talk too much anyway, I thought I’d put my 2 cents in or rather 2 pence.

Nothing in particular. . .

Posted on 1:08pm Wednesday 21st March 2007

There are times when I still feel like such an outsider here in England. I still miss some of the foods I can't get here unless I order from an American website that charges silly money for products I paid much less for in the states. Sometimes my accent seems to stand out to me, other times it seems all the rest of the world has an accent. There are times as well when I feel that I am too loud and too 'out there' for the majority of the British population, that my ideas are a bit on the outrageous side when back at home I'd be thought of as cautious.

Water, water everywhere

Posted on 4:27pm Friday 16th March 2007

If we are to believe what the scientific community are saying about climate change, floods and droughts in Herefordshire will become more frequent and more extreme in the not too distant future. Recent unusually heavy rains gave us a glimpse of things to come. We saw damage to property and vehicles, long transport delays and significant difficulties for business and service providers. And, according to current predictions, we aint seen nothing yet.

Who's to blame?

Posted on 12:17pm Thursday 8th March 2007

I picked up an interesting snippet from a book I’m reading called ‘A Journey in Ladakh’. The author overheard a conversation in a bar in which a question was asked : ’If a Ladakhi woman gets ripped off, paying too much for a poor quality shawl in the market, who’s fault is it ?’ The answer was unanimously ‘the purchaser, she should have known better, and been shrewder’. If you asked the same question here, I wonder what the response would be.

Unnatural Beauty

Posted on 4:48pm Wednesday 7th March 2007

Cosmetic surgery has been in the national news again this week. Mintel’s UK based research revealed that 50% of women surveyed would consider plastic surgery. I found this news disturbing.....

It's that time again. . .

Posted on 3:59pm Tuesday 6th March 2007

I expect to those that take the time to read these blogs think 'my gosh that woman DOES go on and on about the Red Hat Society'. And I suppose I do. When I started the Hereford Chapter of the RHS, I did it because I didn't have any friends. What I discovered in the process was that there were loads of women out there just like me who enjoyed having female friends and some time out with them. We continue to grow but in doing so we have a bit of a dilemma. Many of our ladies still work, therefore most of our activities take place in the evening. We've got a skittle night planned Monday night for something different, if you want to come along and check us out, just let me know. Meanwhile, I've had one lady in particular who would like daytime activities and I am wondering if there are others like her who would prefer not going out at night. If there are, please let me know and we can start a 2nd chapter for our daytimers. I should mention too that you don't have to be over 50 to be an associate pink hat member.

For a sustainable future there will need to be as many young people with an understanding of ecological principles as possible.

Common Sense

Posted on 3:47pm Monday 19th February 2007

Funny that just when I thought I would blog on something that concerns me I got the little 'obituary' shown below. In the last couple of years I've watched some of the youth in Hereford in certain places become more and more disrespectful of authority and at times even violent and distructive.

Monday, Monday. . .

Posted on 8:13am Monday 12th February 2007

Hi from soggy Belmont way. My goodness that snow was a surprise! Especially that 2nd lot that we weren't expecting at all. Seemed to have even caught the weatherman off guard. It was pretty when it first settled though.

Red Hat Ladies Make the News

Posted on 1:30pm Thursday 8th February 2007

I wrote last week about our meeting at The Green Dragon and how the BBC came along and interviewed us for their local internet program. It's not been put on yet but the moment I have a link for it, I will post it here. Wednesday (yesterday) five of us braved the cold to appear on Katie Johnson's program on BBC Hereford Worcester radio. She was very kind to us and allowed us to get the word out to other like-minded ladies about our little group. I say 'little' but we continue to grow with still 2 more members this week.

Green Wars

Posted on 4:06pm Friday 2nd February 2007

On the 18th of January Tesco announced a number of measures that will address it’s energy use and carbon emissions. These include reducing the number of air freighted foods it sells, cutting energy use in its stores, converting its distribution fleet to 50% bio-diesel, and attempting to ‘carbon label’ all of its products....

Red Hat Society Report

Posted on 8:52am Wednesday 31st January 2007

Good morning everyone. . . we had our Red Hat Society meeting and dinner at The Green Dragon Hotel in Broad Street last night with one very welcomed surprise visitor. I had a phone call in the afternoon from Nicola from the BBC who had read about our group of ladies on this very blog. . .hurray, someone is reading these things!!! She wanted to know more about our group and wanted to come along and meet some of us for a possible story for the news. I certainly wouldn’t say no to more publicity especially since I’d love to help get some other chapters started in outlying villages. I’ve had some interest from a few ladies in Leominster but have not found someone willing to take on the leadership.
