I was in my garden at the weekend, doing the Autumn tidying up. After a day of chopping back, weeding and grass cutting my compost heap had doubled in size. I know I should turn it, but it takes so much energy.

The Autumn equinox, September 23rd, is when night and day are of equal length and the nights begin to draw in. It is the end of summer. For thousands of years it has been the time to celebrate the harvest. Since pre-Christian times people have given thanks for the fruits of nature, and the Christian feast of St Michael on September 29th signifies the harvest being safely gathered in.

I’m feeling slightly unhinged after a weekend in London. I’d forgotten just how manic the place is.It was such a relief to come back to Herefordshire.

John Bird is famous for having founded the Big Issue magazine and his latest venture, the Wedge Card, is very interesting. It is a way to get discounts and special offers from local shops and independent businesses. The plan is to re-vitalise local communities by offering an affinity scheme to customers using local shops and services in Central London. It is a loyalty card for using local businesses. www.wedgecard.co.uk

Time moves on rather quickly when you are getting ready to move. The months and months of waiting for the American Embassy to get their finger out and issue a visa to permit my husband to emigrate to the states seemed to take forever and ever but now that we have official dates and times to move as well as fly, the time is really passing faster then I would normally want it to.

This July has got to down in everybody here in Herefordshire's - and indeed the Midland's worst summer in memory. In fact l think we've had our summer it was in April and we blinked and missed it!

Watching the flooding over the last few weeks has brought to mind the hurricanes I've seen hit Florida and up into Louisiana. Devastation, lack of electricity and drinking water. Lost homes, lost transportation, lost lives.

It’s all go. . .or at least it would be if we could get rid of the furniture and things the kids don’t want to take. Isn’t it funny how things change from generation to generation? When I was married at 19 what furniture we had was what you could call ‘early poverty’. We had been married 10 years before we had anything that hadn’t belonged to 2 or 3 owners before us. These days with hire purchase so readily available the kids have beautifully furnished homes very early in their relationships (and a boatload of debt as well sometimes). Of course our tastes in furnishings are different from theirs so is it any wonder that there are things they don’t want.

Hello out there. . .sorry for not blogging for awhile, it’s been a bit chaotic around our house. I told you that we are moving to the states last time I wrote and all that has been moving forward. It seemed at a snail’s pace for a very long time because back in January we sent my husband’s application in to the American Embassy in London for an immigration visa. I say application when what I mean is we sent in pretty much close to half the rain forest in paper. They wanted copies of his passport, my passport, his late wife’s death certificate, my divorce documents, proof of income, a police report, both birth certificates and what we eat for breakfast every morning. Okay the last is an exaggeration but holy cow, what a load of . . .hmm. . .never mind, don’t want the censors to get me. I neglected to say that they wanted $180.00 as well with the application.
