Ice rink is step in the right direction

THE news that an ice rink is to be set up in the city is excellent news indeed. It will add an extra incentive for people to make the trip into town, whilst adding a suitably festive sight to surroundings. The ice rink, which will be situated outside the Shire Hall from Friday 18th for three days, will undoubtedly be a great success and please those who have bemoaned the lack of activity around High Town. It is pleasant to hear that the money raised from the rink will go to the two mayoral charities, the Noah’s Ark Trust and the Little Princess Trust.

Credit must go to Edgar Street Grid chief executive Jonathan Bretherton and his team, as the rink has been arranged by the ESG Company and City Centre Forum. Looking forward, Mr. Bretherton has also claimed that an even larger ice rink could feature in High Town next Christmas. This is a positive and rare example of the ESG team listening to the people of Hereford and giving them what they want. When questioned, many Herefordians have stated their lack of interest in huge retail developments, and have attributed more importance towards rejuvenating High Town. The ice rink is a fine example of something that can do just that. It is not wildly expensive, and will be help rather than hindrance local shops, as it could well lead to more shoppers and families coming into town.

Surely this shows that if enough effort, support and consideration is put in, High Town can provide a solid platform for a productive future for Hereford.
