It was very sad to hear of the closure of the Blackfriars End and part closure of the Len Weston stand at Hereford United’s Edgar Street ground earlier today. As a lifelong fan of Hereford United, I find it particularly frustrating that while the development of the Edgar Street Grid goes full steam ahead there has not been much proactive assistance for Graham Turner and his directors at Hereford United.
There is no doubting the widespread interest which comes to the city when the team is on a good FA Cup run or promotion campaign. Just look at the countless times over the years when national television cameras have been pinned on Hereford. Whether it has been a live match on Sky Sports or the BBC Match of the Day programme covering highlights – many items within their coverage have included references to our local area -our cider, our Hereford cattle and the Wye Valley and so on.
Furthermore, look at the added income which arises from many thousands of supporters descending on Edgar Street for over 25 matchdays a season.
There now needs to be rapid assistance given to our football club. They have served our county with great distinction over the years and I am sure there is room for a few taxpayers to take a small hit now and bear the fruits of a club which is successful well into this century.
If new stadia can be achieved in Shrewsbury or Colchester for example (with a little public sector support may I add) – why not Hereford?
