THE Herefordshire Country Fair is in its 29th year and attracts more than 8,000 people who all help to raise money for local charities.
Last year the one-day August event raised £15,000, a total the organisers hope to equal, if not increase.
It’s the one day of the year when all the communities pull together, share their successes and woes, have some fun and put something back into their county.
Sadly, country fairs are becoming quite a rare thing nationwide so it’s particularly nice to see one that’s thriving.
What I think is so great is the way the fair acts as a voice for the countryside and outdoor pursuits and gives people the chance to know what’s happening on their doorstep, whether that’s tasting the flavour of traditional food and drink or getting involved in the various home organisations.
The entertainment is based on what’s available in the country, like fishing, gun dog competitions, agility and racing competitions, show jumping and clay pigeon shooting.
There are also numerous ‘have a go’ stands for those who want to sample countrylife.
Most of all, it highlights rural life and, as Herefordshire is one of the most rural counties in England, it highlights the lifestyle we all love and the place we want to protect.
The Herefordshire Country Fair is being held on Sunday, August 3, at Castle Meadow, Cradoc, Sellack, near Ross-on-Wye. Follow the signs on the A49 Hereford to Ross Road and I’ll see you there!
