In The Vault

On Monday, my family and I went to see the City silver and charters.
We started by looking at the many gifts that had been presented to Mayor and City, for example twinning agreements between Hereford and the German city of Dillenburg.
There was also a section dedicated to the old RAF base at Credenhill.
Then we went into the vault!
The most obvious items on display were various pieces of silverware donated by the Hereford Militia when they were disbanded. These included candle sticks and wine wagons.
Then we were shown the charters which are letters from the monarch granting Hereford rights as a city. These date back to the 1100's. The old ones had big wax seals, one of them was in near perfect
condition but the other ones had been knocked about a lot.
The early charters were very plain pieces of paper but the one from Queen Elizabeth the 1st was very big and ornate.
All in all it was a very interesting visit.
