The day I was installed as Little Mayor

5:15pm Thursday 29th November 2007

Last Friday I had the ceremony to install me as the first Little Mayor of Hereford. All my school class mates were at the Town Hall as well as my family. Before the ceremony actually began I got the robes put on me. It was like an ankle length red and black gown and round my neck I had a white lace thing which felt very odd and separate half sleeves that had lace cuffs on them and which went on under the robes. As we went into the council chamber the sword bearer walked in front of me and the Mayor and everyone stood up. I was very excited but a bit nervous that something would go wrong. The Mayor nominated me and the leader of the council seconded me and then I had to sign a piece of paper saying that I would take this office and do it to the best of my ability. The Mayor put the chain on me and the Mayors officer had to pin it on my shoulders. The chain wasn't as fancy as the Mayor's but it was still quite heavy and written around the Hereford coat of arms was written Little Mayor of Hereford. Then I had to do a speech of thanks and I was very relieved when I had finished it. After the ceremony was finished we all went to the hall and had lots of chocolate cake and juice. I had to sign a lot of people's pieces of paper and shake a lot of hands. Overall the ceremony was quite nerve wracking but very interesting because it was a scaled down version of what they do for the real Mayor.
