New Year's Resolutions

By Cindy Read »

I hate making resolutions! I suppose because I always set myself up to fail making unrealistic goals for myself like lose 50 pounds in 3 weeks, okay well maybe not quite that ridiculous but you get my meaning.

So I've decided this year not to make resolutions. I am getting back on the diet I was on before Christmas and all the mince pies arrived, the good news I only gained back 3 1/2 lbs. of the 13 1/2 I had lost.

There IS motivation. . .a trip to Rome in April for a few days, with all that walking to do, carrying a few less pounds would certainly be healthier. A special wedding the end of June, when our Juliet gets married, I don't want to be fat in the photos.

I think too I want to try and take things less personally. Over a year ago I had a friend; one day she just disappeared from my life. I ran into her in town 3 months after she had been at our home for a dinner party and asked her if I had offended her in some way. She said yes as a matter of fact I had offended her husband by something I said. I was gobsmacked, I was devastated because at the time I had no other friends. I was hurt that I hadn't even been given a chance to apoligise for saying something I don't even remember saying, she just decided that she wouldn't be my friend anymore. So after a year of feeling angry and hurt, I am going to try and keep in mind that I don't have control over other people's decisions. I am not a bad person just because she decided I wasn't worthy of her friendship. Not having been given a chance to make things right was her choice not mine. You see that's one of the problems with being a Cancer, we take everything personally and we can't just forget a hurt that someone causes us, we carry it with us forever. But all that said, it's time I stopped worrying about what I have no control over.

In the end, we don't have the power to change the big things in the world. We can work with others to make changes, we can work on making changes in our own little circle of family and friends or within ourselves and if we succeed, and if everyone worked on those little changes, being kinder to people, doing something nice for others less fortunate, then the world would be a nicer place.

Go out and commit a random act of kindness today! Let a car out ahead of you into traffic, let the person in the check out queue with less items then you go ahead of you, hold a door for someone. It takes so little to make the world a better place.
