CHARGING points for electric cars are to be installed across Herefordshire.

The devices will be set up in Hereford and each market town over the next 12 months as part of a drive by Herefordshire Council to boost green travel.

Earlier this year city-based firm Fownhope Mitsubishi voiced concern it might struggle to sell electric cars because of a lack of charging points, the nearest being in Hay-on-Wye.

But Councillor Russell B Hamilton, cabinet member for environment and planning, said the new charging points would put Herefordshire on the electric car map.

“Insofar as our offer of charging points is concerned, we hope that as a result of this more people will consider electric vehicles as a serious proposition,” he added.

“This will help reinforce and support our commitment to becoming a low-carbon county.”

I'm off to blow me brains out. God above and bloody hell.
Under normal circumstances and in a normal County, this news would be great but these ain't normal times. These are extraordinary times and we are teetering on the brink.
Sweet loving Jesus, lets sort out our infrastructure first and do a million and one other sane things before we put in place these chargers that'll cost us a bomb.
Im beginning to look like someone who's spent two years on Devils Island. We've gotta get rid of this Council.
Please, Im begging you Councillor Hamilton don't do it yet. Let us recover, get out of this recession and prosper first before we move on to yet another gimmick.
For pity's sake, have mercy on us. Lets sort out the vegetation that blocks our flood defences first before you commit us to this.

I don't know anyone who owns an electric car. Other than those scooter things you see hurtling along the pavement. The one's you see parked all day outside Wetherspoons or the Queens.Wouldn't it make more sense to fill in the potholes first with this spare electric powerpoint cash. That would benefit all County car owners. There's a big pothole at the end of my street that's been there for months.....

Maybe one of the directors at Fownhope Mitsubishi is also a councilor? Seriously, iv'e not heard anything as pathetic as this in years, it even outshines the "Here you can" story for money wasting!!! I walk a friend to work at Sun Valley almost every day of the week and the road from the Admag office until the Sun Valley shop entrance is almost always flooded, people on their way to or from work getting soaked by vehicles boring through the water, along that stretch are four drains, totally ineffective because they're up to the brim with silt and have grass and vegetation growing out of them!!! Stuff the power points for electric cars and spend the money where it's needed!!!

This bloody Council intend to electrocute us all. I'll be damned if I'm going to ride the lightening bolt for Councillor Hamilton.
Once the Wye and Lugg rise we will fry especially if they put a charger anywhere near our flood defences.
That its come to this. They intend to dispatch us all with a burst of voltage.
Unbelievable. They've lost touch with reality.

Jeez...this is getting beyond belief? I've said it before and I'll say it again - where are the hell are the Council's priorities? When the child protection services are in the gutter, we see them waving a flag that they're going to install battery chargers on the whim of Fownhope Mitsubishi. Have we any data on how many electric cars there actually are in Hereford?

Typical Tories looking after big business and those with money when the rest of us are struggling to pay the shopping bill and other, more important services are failing. Talk about out of touch with reality.

Take a look at yourself HC and ask the question; are you acting in the best interests of the people? How can you justify this expenditure (where are the figures around this) when your slashing budgets to vital services?

Hamilton is going on about our progress toward lowering our carbon emissions. We are near to bloody zero now.
The only time you'll spot a faint glow from the City at night using Google Earth is when we all sit there nibbling a custard slice and watching Britains Got Talent.
We are bloody doomed.

No harm in joining the 21st century - go to Paris, hire an electric car by the hour - or a bike (you can do that all over the UK too - but don't think I've seen one in Hereford so far. It's a small city, mostly flat, quite compact and ought to be ideal for electric cars and bikes. Why not be ahead of the curve for once (or at least not too far behind it)?

Absolutely ludicrous - so many other things to spend money on and who or how will users pay for the use if they do continue down this road? Will it need additional staff to collect revenue or will it be free and paid for by the poor ole rate payer again? Think again HC, stop trying to be something you are not and start looking after and listening to your community!!!

I travel to Birmingham a number of times a week and nearly always stop at Hopwood Services on the M42,both going to and returning to the county.
They have installed a number of these charging points in the car park, never have I seen a car parked in these bays Since they were installed. Prior to installing theses charging points the bays were Disabled Parking Bays. So it appears that the location of charging points is more important that bays for the disabled.

This is an absolute waste of money. I think i should offer my advice to Herefordshire Council on the outcome of this - The only people who will try to use these are bored youths who think they maybe able to charge their ipods/ipads/iphones on them. Seriously though could we not spend the cash on something we need like a bypass or finding out why our Council are not protecting our children!!

What a total waste of our money again - why oh why do Herefordshire Council do this. It would be interesting to know how many electric cars there are in Hereford, how many visit Herefordshire and how many the garage expect to sell.
This will be the green nutters from the Sustainablity Team doing their waste of time thing again.
I totally agree, lets get the infrastructure right before we start putting these points in. We are told we will have to park elsewhere and not travel into the city - and this totally right.
It is good to be ahead of other citys, but lets face it Hereford is not exactly Paris!!

Presumably the same green Council nutters that have just given a local car club £30k, yes, thirty thousand pounds, to buy 3 cars with so they can all share them nicely. And no they're not even electric!
