Closure of public loos - decision due today

PLANS to close four public lavatories in the centre of Hereford have met with dismay by a pensioner with more reason than most to object.

Peter Sackett, 76, has irritable bladder syndrome and says Herefordshire Council’s decision to consider closing the loos could see those with similar ailments voting with their feet.

“We will either suffer in silence or we will avoid going into town altogether, which will not be good for business,” he said.

His comments follow the authority’s announcement that lavatories in East Street, Union Street, the Merton Meadow car park and Maylord’s slip road have been earmarked for closure following a review into the services it provides.

A decision is set to be made by the council’s cabinet today (Thursday).

Reasons the four sites were selected include anti-social issues or that alternatives are nearby. It costs almost £250,000 a year to maintain the lavatories.
