£145k council boss job is advertised

HEREFORDSHIRE Council is using a London-based recruitment specialist to find its new chief executive

Veredus – a trading name of Capita Business Services – has begun advertising the post worth up to £145,000.

The application details confirm that package is worth up to £145,000 a year subject to a biannual review, with a 30-day annual leave entitlement plus public and bank holidays.

The council has not, however, confirmed a cost for the recruitment process itself.

Current chief executive Chris Bull – who leaves at the end of this month – was on £183,724 last year, pushed up to a total remuneration of £222,490 by pension contributions.

Forty-five per cent of his salary was recharged to the primary care trust.

Applications for the post close on October 22 with final interviews set for November 12 and 13.

This job is not for me. I fancy a change of scenery for a little while, so may apply for the same post in Suffolk at a more realistic salary of £267,000 - according to Taxpayers Alliance website.
With 3097 council employees earning in excess of £100,000 in the UK I feel spoiled for choice.
When I told my boss I was 'worth it', his reply was .... not printable on this page!!

Could the Council not get somebody competent to do the job for £140k ? It makes me really annoyed our money is funding a gravy train for these high up types ...

I've absolutely no idea how we can get this Council to pay any attention to the new reality. These deluded and deranged, chaos creating idiots are going to bung some London based company a fist full of our money to secure the services of some fool who'll sit there, supervising the fabrication of some hugely expensive continuation of chaos and his or hers only redemption will be, 'Yes,Im completely useless but I've created more mess for Hereford at less of the cost than my predecessor'.
I know you lot read our Postings, so what is it that you don't grasp?
Come on here and tell us because Im running out of insults to hurl at you

Close the Minor Injuries Unit at Leominster and Ross because of shortage of money. Then pay £145.000 salary.
We the Council Tax payer deprived of care while someone gets paid this obscene amount
Mr David Cameron PM said the National Health Service is safe in our hands. I hope the Conservatives don't come asking for my vote again. What I shall answer is unprintable on here!!!!!!

Successful applicant will have been trained by and inducted into the secret society that is Common Purpose (training paid for by the hapless Council Tax payer). This will ensure their anti-democratic and pro-EU social engineering will continue. Do not think for one moment that our new CEO will have the remotest interest in bettering Herefordshire. After all, can anyone name one good thing the last one did?

TwoWheels, I can mate. He left!
You just know we're going to get some pen pushing, management speak, I love a gimmick, blue sky thinking, mindless drongo who's had a charisma bye-pass and a full frontal lobotomy.
If he or she emerges from the shadow of secrecy and stands next to one of the new signs, pointing at the bulls testacles and proclaiming, Here We Can, I'm going straight down the Town Hall and beat myself upon the skull with the larger of my three mallets.
Whats the betting their first quote to the HT will be, 'I'm passionate about my new role and I'm driven to deliver.'
They'll probably negotiate some little expenses package that allows them to stay in London and work from home and only travel up here for some pointless but obligatory team building excercise.
That said, lets stay optimistic!

Absolute madness!...how can someone who is in charge of a shithole like hereford be on more money than the guy in charge of the whole **** country!?

Great to see HC investing in the county here eh? Surely they could've used a local recruiting firm for this paper shuffling exercise? Money going out of the county just like the 'Here you can...' fiasco. It'll be we'll worth it in the end though when we get someone who is worth so much money. In times when there is no money perhaps it would've made more sense to get rid of the post altogether and distribute the workload amongst those in HC who already earn massive amounts of money for seemingly doing very little and making crazy decisions. Oh well.

Can I add some balance to the negativeness of the previous comments.

The guys who choose to do this job can earn much much more when working for non government institutions.

For example the Company which owns the HT (News Quest ) pays its Chief Exec £609,385 + £94,986 ( A nice tidy sum) He manages a budget of £365 million compared to the councils £145 million (40% less money managed for 76% less wage ) . So if we go by this industry rate Hereford council should be paying £240000 +.

To manage a budget as big as the councils, you need to pay big bucks, other wise you will get an even bigger clown. Its all well and good for people to rant about the pay, but non of us have the experience or knowledge to carry out the Job despite all the opinions we have on how things should be done ! Looking at some of the nonsense posts on this website if you people were in charge Hereford would be broke within a few months.

Lukio - Brilliant idea lets get rid of the Boss ... nice one ! who then makes all of the people below accountable .. and as for the fiasco you mention ... The campaign for 'Here you can' is an excellent idea to promote and help with the rejuvenation of Hereford rather than let it continue in its current state of going to the dogs as you seem to wish it to !

Apdor, My very warmest regards to you. I've read your piece and its well written and well thought through and I dare say you may, in some areas of your argument be right, certainly regarding our negativity toward this thread of news but..... in this age of the 'new reality' I actually think that Lukio, who aint negative by nature, is right. The 'top' at the Council could delegate, spread the responsibility and save us thousands of pounds. I honestly dont think that this is such a bad idea and I would think that it is something that the Council could have considered instead of spending thousands of pounds outside of Hereford to hire some recruitment firm.
As far as our negativity is concerned, you are right, but you must understand that for some of us, we are sick and tired of sitting back watching this Council ruin our home with their crazy and badly thought out schemes.
Regarding your posting relating to 'Here you Can', you are wrong. Spending thousands of pounds on this project and then getting Councillor Jarvis to stand there being photographed pointing at a member of the animal kingdom is crazy and it wont bring a single person with a pound to spend into our Herefordshire.
Finally you suggest that we want Hereford to go to the dogs. Let me say this, we Posters dont sit here doing this in order to bring down Hereford. We do it because we care and we take the view that this Council are unfit to lead our community and subsequently, whenever we can, we Post to put some pressure upon this bunch who I feel are bringing about our Citys ruin.
My very warmest regards to you.

apdor - 'the guys' wouldn't last 5 minutes in the real world, and you trot out the same tired argument that we have to pay the going rate to get the quality. The Council doesn't have to 'earn' a penny - it doesn't have to make or sell anything because it it has a guaranteed income year after year. NO business has that luxury. All the Council have to do is simply balance the books, a feat which they are seemingly incapable of doing. Any CEO whose business consistently overspent and mismanaged would be out of the door - Council officers on the other hand simply move onto the next Council. As for getting rid of the boss - an increasing number of Councils have successfully done just that. No one is accountable in Council's - they all look after each other. Yes to a boss that is a figurehead, a leader and driver (in the manner of, say, Boris), but otherwise - come on ...

Apdor.....do you sit on the council?
most of what you said is dribble......you pay for what you get you say....well im sure millions of people around the country would not agree with that, just look at all the fat cats in the city who were paid £100ks working in the banks, they shafted EVERYONE then walk away with massive pay offs and I for one dont like the idea of some from that sort of background coming to our county in charge of our money and selling us down the river by telling the council to invest our money in pointless projects leave us with evenless than we got now! maybe we should go to Greese and put see if anyone there wants the top job! im betting that you could get someone with all the experience and knowledge for £40k a year!

3 malletts ??
What do you need 3 malletts for ?
I only have one
The head of a local authority is not really comparable to a business leader.
There's guaranteed income and obligations. It's mostly administration and as previous posters have said, holding the minions to account and ensuring their is the right culture.
