Superfast broadband deal to be decided today

A MULTI-million pound contract that kickstarts the county’s superfast broadband coverage should be decided today (Thursday).

Cabinet members are expected to agree on a successful, and as-yet-unnamed, bidder that will provide a broadband network in those parts of the county that don’t – or won't – receive commercial investment.

To do this members meet in a secret session to debate “specific contractual points”.

This afternoon, cabinet members will be asked to give their approval to the council spending a further £4.1 million on Borders Broadband scheme – £6 million has already been pledged by the authority – to match funding from BDUK (Broadband Delivery UK).

Explaining the need for additional funding, cabinet member Councillor Graham Powell said: “During the contract negotiation it became apparent that we required additional BDUK financial support because of the rural sparsity of the county and because a high proportion of the current telecommunications infrastructure utilizes overhead cabling."

So a little bit of the secret is out. Spoonfed to us plebs by dear Councillor Powell who I'm sure is on another committee that boosts his salary. The secret? It's going to cost you idiots more than we at first thought.
Yippee Doo. Take me Jesus I'm ready.

A FURTHER £4.1 million? On top of £6m? 32% increase and they haven't even started yet? Did the council not realise the rural sparsity of the county? I still fail to understand why the Council need to be involved in this at all. £10m would go an awful long way on grass roots spending - maintenance of roads and buildings. Not glamorous or head line grabbing, but what in reality Councils were set up to do, not play at being a business, which they've demonstrated time and time again, they are incapable of doing. We'll be shafted by the real businessmen, yet again.

Cllr Powell says in another HT story about this - “Herefordshire is the most difficult place in the country to deliver this.” In the COUNTRY? Has he peeked over the border at the terrain in Wales? Has he ever ventured as far as Scotland? Why oh why are these muppets in charge of anything?

Unfortunately, by the time Herefordshire has half decent broadband another technology will have arrived and we'll always be on the back foot.

TwoWheels is dead right. I wish that just one of you Parasitic Fleas would come on here, post something and challenge what TwoWheels has said.
I know you bottom feeding, low life freeloaders are reading our postings but still you can't summon up the courage to say a word.
I despise all of you leeches associated with our Incompetent bungling council.
All you touch turns to a flea ridden dog, with a busted back leg and a gnarled and chewed tail ripped apart by some rabid badger.
You are all useless and I'm running out of insults I can hurl at you freeloading maggots.
