DRIVERS may have already noticed the new look Welcome to Herefordshire signs springing up on county borders.

The new signs now read: “Herefordshire – Here you can”.

Herefordshire Council leader Councillor John Jarvis said the new boundary signs will be rolled out across the county over the next six months.

The brand has been developed by the Herefordshire Business Board, Visit Herefordshire and the council.

I don't know quite what to say. Is this the Councils response to all the Welcome to Poland signs?
Here you Can! Can we really. Can we really what? Here you Can go bust. Here you can lose your job. Here you can pick fruit. Here you Can what.
Were on the fast slope to oblivion and the Council say, Here You Can.
I honestly despair at their incompetence.
Please tell me cos I'm keen to know, What Can We Do Here.
Window Dressing, Slogans and Gimmicks ain't going to slow or stop this rapid and accelerating decent into a doomed future.
I'm going to bed and swallow another diazepam.

HERE YOU CAN??....WHAT??
Go shopping mmmmm NOPE!!!!
Drive around the traffic using a bypass mmmmm NOPE!!!!!

SORRY, but until there's any improvements in this 'once' beautiful city(and i mean major improvements) nothing else will be good enough

But why oh why do they do it??
Its so upsetting watching this city being dragged down and allowed to fall apart just because of a couple of idiots

Silentbull, I know. I feel just the same. I love Hereford.
Me? I just rant and rave about the Council to get rid of my frustrations. I give the Council grief in the hope that they read it and it makes a difference.
My very warmest regards.

It's the most idiotic, senseless pile of bull dung this Council has produced for some while and that’s really saying something. These are the 'new look Welcome to Herefordshire signs' - well excuse my poor eyesight, but where is the 'welcome to' part? What tells a visitor they are entering Herefordshire? Nothing. Every County across the Country proudly welcomes you with their 'Welcome to' sign, but us, we rip ours up and replace them, at some considerable Amey enhanced cost, by this nonsense. It will come as no surprise to learn that the Council did not employ one of the many fine graphic designers that scrape a living in Herefordshire, no, they went to one of the most expensive design houses in London, so God only knows how much this non-sensical rebranding cost. This puerile word play might go down well selling underwear in a glossy magazine, but as a welcome to our County? Its an affront to all who live and work here.

I pay my council tax and what do they do with my money... go installing new signs that make no sense, am I supposed to look at these signs when I'm too busy trying to avoid the darn potholes.

TwoWheelsGood says...
11:22pm Sun 16 Sep 12

It gets worse - if, for some ungodly reason, you want to use the branding to help your Herefordshire business, you have to read a 51 page instruction book and then apply to a Council drone, sorry, 'brand guardian' and then the 'brand management group'. THIS is where OUR money goes, NOT on essentials like school repairs, potholes, health care and all the other social responsibilities that the Council are charged with.

Herefordian says...
11:07am Mon 17 Sep 12

The money would have been better spent on employing someone to go around the county with a bucket & sponge to wash the algie covered junction signs, village signs etc and a pair of hedgeclippers to uncover them from overgrown hedges
Provide me with a little van & equipment and a £50 digi camera and I will take pictures of the potholes at the same time. Pay me £10,000 wages and I would be happy at that

Herefordian says...
11:10am Mon 17 Sep 12

Oh, and on the new signs where is the Apple?
The best welcoming signs anywhere in the county are those welcoming you to Ledbury, in my view anyway

VWVWVW says...
12:08pm Mon 17 Sep 12

OK - so what CAN you do here? This isn't a welcome sign at all. It's boring and bland and says nothing to a visitor about this beautiful county.
I'd be very interested to know what the reason is for deciding the old ones should be replaced, when it was decided and who by. Perhaps we could be told this, and how much time and money this change has/will cost.

What has happened to Bobby47's earlier comment? Hi Bobby47, by the way. It made me chuckle so much that I almost cancelled the training of my horde of killer zombie squirrels.
I plan to train them to remove these silly signs. All signs in fact! It will make journeys much more entertaining. Then they will be re-trained to help Bobby47 dig for Studmarsh in the wrong place. Then I will release them to wreak their terrible zombie squirrel army havoc. I thank you.

I'm actually sat here contemplating getting Mr John Slough to build me a large cannon, position it in St.Owen Street and take his advice on trajectory, size and composition of the explosive package that I would dispatch at the Council leaders. I've gotta get some help.
I just can't get my head around why they would think this new sign would help us. They seem to live in some parallel universe where all is shiny, happy and clappy and they are oblivious to the mess we are all in.
I mean for example, we all know that we have a vast East European population that are having a huge impact upon our fragile community. I ain't having a pop at the good people from East Europe. But, the Council are just likely to announce another Polish week and rub our noses in it some more.
We've got massive problems that are a threat to our future. We are haemorrhaging massive amounts of money to our East European visitors every single month, we have no jobs for our kids, no infrastructure to speak of, no investment, cynics like me are germinating all over the place and the Council give us this new sign!
It's simply madness and I have no idea how we can get them, our Council leaders to listen to us.
I'll shut up now.

Clarkester says...
5:02pm Mon 17 Sep 12

This has been playing on my mind all afternoon...
It makes no sense to me.
Is the county called Herefordshire?
Which, if I am not mistaken is pronounced "Herryfordshire" pretty much.
So, are the Powers That Be suggesting that we should alter that to Herefordshire, pronounced the same as Hear? If they are not...Aaarrggghhhh..
.. My brain is imploding!

It's like the best caption competition in the world, isn't it...as you drive into Hereford complete the phrase.
Here you can...'t
Here you can get stuck in traffic
Here you can have your pic taken touching a bronze bull's bits.
I love it!! hmmmmm. It will at least make my husband and I smile the next time I return. So many opportunities for graffiti though, no??

And Clarkester, I do believe it did used to be pronounced like you say as it comes from - ford here or something like that in reference to
river crossings of old. Who knows. Might be a load of old bull. No pun intended.

RogerLFC says...
8:04pm Mon 17 Sep 12

Where are these signs? As the signs say 'Herefordshire' (in a fashion) I would expect them as a greeting at the County Boundary. There is an absence of a 'greeting' on the sign but hey ho! I would not expect those signs on the edge of Hereford City.

TwoWheelsGood says...
8:06pm Mon 17 Sep 12

bobby47 - please don't point your large canon at the Town Hall - this houses only the Country's largest Parish Council - Hereford City Council, who busy themselves with hanging baskets and the like. Its also rather a fine building. No, the receptors of your ire periodically - Jarvis et al - gather from time to time at the committee room in Brockington Towers. Its not just one sign by the way - they'll be rolling out dozens of these at all the checkpoints into the County.

Lukio says...
9:55pm Mon 17 Sep 12

As rightly pointed out above we will now become known as 'Hear'fordshire. What a waste of time this really is.

I would be very interested to know how much this has cost in total.

And Bobby, be careful pointing that cannon at Brockington as I'm not too far from there...although a quick lights out may be less painful than watching this wonderful county slowly fade away to obscurity.

bobby47 says...
7:28am Tue 18 Sep 12

TwoWheels and Lukio, Noted Comrades. The Town Hall and Brockington are off my list. The Cannon is out. It's madness. An aiming error of just a few inches could take out half of Tupsley or the new lift at Garrick House.
I'm going back to my original idea, prompted by Lukios, Quick Lights Out job, I will become a Jumper. I allways had it in mind and that's me plan.

I fear it's too late - the smart London designers have no doubt already banged in their huge design fee, so that’s money leaving the County we'll never see again.

By the way, has anyone spotted this sign appears to be in front of a stile, blocking a footpath? Why is it not facing the road?

IanMurray says...
3:52pm Tue 18 Sep 12

So as drivers whiz past they will see a sign that says: "Herefordshire" ....

and then they'll wonder what the two words - something about cans - was underneath.

An advert for some private highway maintenance perhaps?

We have some real idiots leading the council don't we. I am embarrassed.

IanMurray says...
4:19pm Tue 18 Sep 12

Actually the more I think about this, the more outraged I am at the stupidity of poor design, bad wording and missed opportunity, together with this pointless cost during a recession (and the added cost of the urgent need for their replacement).

I have not met and do not know Mr Jarvis, I am not even aware of which party he aligns himself to, but as he has deliberately put his name to this and is clearly the man in charge, I believe this appalling error of judgement suggests that he is not be fit to hold such high office and I think Mr Jarvis needs to consider his future.

I drive past the one near the Pontrilas Checkpoint and noticed it last week.
It's embarrassing.

I imagine the highly paid designers took the view that the client, Herefordshire Council's John Jarvis, is a bit thick, so a sophisticated message wouldn't be acceptable.
Then they probably came up with this in 5 minutes in the corridor and submitted a huge invoice.

It would be funny if we hadn't paid for it.

Maybe, maybe not. i do think Hereford need updating, but I think the main city centre should be the focus first. what is the point in having a new shopping centre in Edgar street when the main city centre is falling apart?

I would prefer to give IOC a go, after all they can't be any worse than the idiots we have in power now. Tell me what have the Torys done for Hereford since they been in power?
Nothing , apart from wasting money and forcing local stores to close.

i voted for IOc the last time, not voting again, what is the point when the people of Hereford follow like sheep.

i can understand why younger people want to leave this city, nothign for them what so ever and never will be, Hereford is a dead city.

We need new shops, sure, after all most of my shopping is now online as with Amazon or other sites like it as the item is either not sold here or too expensive. but what we need are shops in the city centre, not in Edgar street because some company that got people in charge that knows nothing about Hereford want to charge a lower rent.

i tend to stay away from the city centre now, no point in going there.

But thats the problem IOC wouldn't have done any of the things you mentioned, they don't want anything to change in Herefordshire at all.
I hate the Tory council we currently have and consider them nothing short of common thieves, but IOC would have been just as bad. You only have to look at their record at town level to see that they have regularly voted against any type of development, so you wouldn't have got your city center improvements anyway.
I agree too many sheep in Herefordshire who vote the same way as their parents and grand-parents did .. perhaps its time for a radical change with a party created that REALLY wants what is best for Herefordshire and its people.
