Cider makers Bulmers and Westons have been making their mark in London.

Bulmers, currently celebratings its 125th anniversary, is been proudly trumpeting the drink's Hereford roots with giant billboard adverts around the capital, while Westons Cider has been promoting one of its brews with the help of two England cricketers.

Sanjay Patel, brands director at Heineken, which now owns Bulmers, said everyone knows the cider giant as a modern innovator, but many are less familiar with the firm’s colourful history.

Meanwhile, Westons spent time with cricketers Ian Bell and Tim Bresnan for a video shot at The Oval which celebrated the three-year partnership between the Much Marcle firm’s Stowford Press and the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Agreed in the beginning there definitely was Hereford, the biggest problem is that Hereford is still stuck in the primordial soup stage of development, even today.

Ironic that the picture is behind a log jam of traffic - something Hereford knows a lot about.

When I first arrived in Hereford over thirty years ago it was wonderful.
I arrived from the sprawling Towns of the Midlands and for me, Hereford had everything you could ever want in a relatively small area. The City centre was great and the employers were numerous and large and all was well.
My first month in Hereford back in 1979, the Hereford Times headline was a story about the plans and real possibility of a ring road.
Today, I can't think of a few extra yards added to our dual carriageway system within the City.
It's truly tragic how our great City has been drawn into decline and it's all down to very poor leadership and no imagination of our kids tomorrow's.
Firms like Sun Valley and Bulmers were once places for our kids to go and work but now, whatever is left of the declining work force in Hereford is now dominated by the good people of East Europe.
I think we all realised that we were on the slope of decline. I don't think any of us could have imagined how steep our slope was and how rapid our decline has been.
I know that I should be more optimistic and less cynical but a little picture displaying the name of our home is nothing for us to pleased about.
My warmest regards to you all.

In the beginning there was Hereford......(I think they missed this bit off the end) and Bulmers employed lots of people and now they don't. I

Ah yes, of course, I see now. If the council puts a ring of tarmac round the city (and builds 8000 new homes to pay for it) Hereford will instantly return to its "former glory". I moved here 20 years ago. It was a rural backwater then. It still is. That's why I moved here and long may it continue. If you want the glorious bright lights of Birmingham, move there.

20 years ago one of the big issues was the potential splitting of Herefordshire from Worcestershire. There was widespread enthusiasm for this, usually in the hope that undoing the union of the 1970s would somehow take us back there and put the Bay City Rollers back in the charts. (I seem to recall we had a referendum in which the options were: 1. A unitary authority for Herefordshire, 2. A unitary authority for Herefordshire or 3. A unitary authority for Herefordshire). Only a few lone voices pointed out that Herefordshire was much more expensive to run than Worcestershire but had a lower income. It's amusing that now people are looking back with nostalgia to the days 30 years ago when Herefordshire was run from Worcester.
