Supermarket celebrates birthday - 20 years after protest
8:50pm Thursday 30th August 2012 in News
A SUPERSTORE which prompted protests in a Herefordshire town ahead of its opening is now marking 20 years of trading.
Back in 1991, residents and businesses in Leominster claimed the planned Safeway store would hit the town’s main shopping area, prompting more than 70 objection letters to be sent to the then district council.
But the Barons Cross store, now a Morrisons, was given the go-ahead and staff and shoppers have marked two decades in Leominster.
The anniversary will be celebrated with the cutting of a special cake and a function for the 179 members of staff.
