HEREFORDSHIRE pond dwellers are being given a helping hand thanks to a £43,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The lottery-funded Ponds Network Project will see Herefordshire Nature Trust (HNT) and Herefordshire Amphibian and Reptile Team (HART) work together with 25 parishes between the Bromyard Downs to Brockhampton and Bringsty to protect ponds and teach people about water-dwelling wildlife.

Volunteers who sign up will survey ponds and identify species while being encouraged to create new ponds at home and at schools.

Herefordshire is home to rare pond dwellers such as Great Crested newts.

The last survey undertaken by HART recorded almost 300 ponds across the county.
