Olympic paint job for phone box near Weobley, Herefordshire

Picture by Mark Rogers Picture by Mark Rogers

WHILE Royal Mail paints post boxes gold to celebrate Great Britain’s Olympic success, a mystery decorator has added a splash of red, white and blue to a phone box in Herefordshire.

A Union flag has been painted on top of the kiosk between Ledgemoor and Weobley Marsh.

This picture of the patriotic paint job was sent in by Mark Rogers, 44, who said: “Well done to the mystery decorator.

It’s a great improvement over its faded, former appearance.”

HCC will need to buy some gold paint on 1st September when James Bevis from Clehonger wins the gold in the Paralympic shooting. Come on James, do us proud!!

Where've you been the last fortnight? As well as the commemorative stamps featuring photos of each and every GB gold medal winner (two in the case of Mo Farah, one for each distance) Royal Mail has painted a post box gold in each of their home towns.

The Olympics doesn't particularly interest me.

Well, if it's just in the home towns that's not quite so bad. But considering the Royal Mail spend 90% of their time complaining about loosing money, increasing prices, firing people and talking about possibly shutting down, I don't think they should be painting too many boxes.

Every town should advertise the fact that they have a gold medal Olympian. If the PO want to do their bit for that, then good on them.

They painted 29 boxes gold, that's not too many! How about celebrating the fact that our athletes did well, a smudge of national pride never hurt any country.

Royal Mail's problem is that we don't send letters, not the fact that they don't do a good job of painting postboxes.

I post several letters a week and am just off to post 2 more now.

I have no problem with painting 29 boxes - this wasn't made clear in the article, but my point remains; that a business that constantly complains about how much it's failing should be careful about what it spends it's money on.

Technically this is vandalism. I know it's not the worst vandalism in the world but it's interesting to see the local press celebrating it.

"Technically this is vandalism."

And yet, it looks significantly better than the **** they scribble on the development boards around town in the name of "local art".

It's just a flag. Painting a design that's been around for 211 years is hardly imaginative. At least the art produced by the young people who have their work attached to the hoardings is original.

What I do in the toilet is original - it doesn't mean it's pleasant to look.

I have no problem with art or murals, but what I see around the town is nothing but awful scribbling. It makes the town look like a derelict part of Liverpool.

It really doesn't. Total overreaction.

ArmadilloSackRace-- Biotech is right. THE scrawling on Herefords walls, subways etc is horrible. IT makes the place look like an inner city slum. It costs the council thousands of pounds to remove too. I'm sure you would disapprove if you found it on your wall or garage door.

@HFDBob - I'm talking about the **** "art" that they get kids from the colleges to scrawl all over the development boards - like outside River Island.

It seems they don't vet the "art", they just give kids crayons and tell them to go nuts.

I forgot to add earlier, in response to Biomech, that the postbox painting is a comparatively cheap publicity stunt which will in turn help sell hundreds of thousands more of the commemorative stamps not just to philatelists and sports fans but to the many proud British people who just want a souvenir of an uplifting, inspiring occasion that Biomech is clearly too stony-hearted to celebrate with the vast majority of the rest of the population.
