Spend cash on care not council magazine, says campaigner

A DISABILITY campaigner believes cash spent on a Herefordshire Council magazine should be used to avoid cuts to volunteer carers.

Sylvie Nicholls believes money spent on producing Herefordshire Matters would be better spent helping family carers who are currently threatened with charges for the respite help they receive.

In February 2010, the Hereford Times revealed the gross annual cost of Herefordshire Matters was £75,000.

Sylvie, the chairman of Herefordshire Disability United, said: “It is a luxury we could do without.”

The council is currently proposing to charge all carers with assets valued at £23,500 up to £20 an hour for respite care.

At a meeting on Tuesday at Hinton Community Centre, Councillor Nick Nenadich, cabinet support team member for adult social care, said: “The nation cannot afford to do everything so it’s coming down to the stark reality of choices.”

When we get the magazine it goes straight into the recycling bin. I don't think there has ever been a time when I have thought...... 'wonder when the next issue of Hereford matters is out, I can't wait to see what exciting topics they are covering this time !

I agree with Sylvie Nicholls this is money that should be spent on far more important things. This council are well known for wasting money and this is just another example, how can they justify spending £75,000 on a magazine that few people think worthwhile, and just as important - why is this magazine printed outside of herefordshire, if you are going to waste money on it at least use a local company to produce it!

"The stark reality of choices" says the councillor - yes, money for carers or money for a magazine which the public have made it clear on numerous occasions it does not want. No one is taken in by the propaganda it peddles - scrap it and use the money wisely (for once, please).

When this arrives in my letterbox I just put it straight into the recycling bin. I imagine many other people do the same. What a waste of very limited resources, particularly at a time when support for vulnerable people is being cut. Priorities, Hereford Council!
