Jail for man who stabbed a stranger in Hereford city

A MAN who stabbed a complete stranger unlucky enough to cross his path while walking home in Hereford was “crying out for help”, a court heard this week.

David Day, aged 48, asked John Tetley for directions to High Town and seconds later, without warning, stabbed him in the stomach.

Mr Tetley needed emergency surgery after the five-inch blade severed an artery in his abdomen.

At Worcester Crown Court on Tuesday, Judge John Cavell told Day the violent attack in Friars Street on December 21 last year was proof he posed a significant risk to members of the public.

Day had pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and guilty to possession of an offensive weapon.

He was sentenced to a minimum of four years but will not be released until a parole board deems him safe.
