Herefordshire Council’s Amey contract up for grabs

HEREFORDSHIRE Council will not renew its contract with highway and parks partner Amey, it was announced this morning.

The local authority said a 12 month tendering process will now begin ahead of the Amey contract ending next summer.

The new company would be involved in various projects, possibly including the much-talked-about city bypass.

Geoff Hughes, the Council’s director for places and communities, said the authority wants to provide the best value for money, adding there is nothing stopping Amey from applying for the new contract.

“We have a very open mind,” he said.

“This is a big contract. It is about providing the best value for money. But, in the meantime, it is business as usual with Amey.”

The current contract began in 2003 with Amey taking over from Jarvis three years later. The company’s contract remit includes highways, rights of way, building services and ancillary roles such as catering and printing.

Staff at the council and Amey were told of the news this morning.

Council leader, Councillor John Jarvis, said the Amey partnership had been successful.

“We would like to thank Amey for its continued commitment to service delivery.

“This has been a productive relationship for the county which has over recent years seen substantial investment in maintaining and improving the county’s infrastructure.”

Amey chief executive Mel Ewell said the company wants to continue working with the council and will "actively engage with the forthcoming procurement process".

More in next week’s Hereford Times.

I hope they don't go for some cheapjack outfit like Jarvis
At least Amey upkeep the area better. The litter is cleared from the gutters, the grass is cut regularly. Widemarsh Common is well looked after and flowers on the roundabouts are well tended
Just a few things but I expect someone will be along to say otherwise. Just think back when Jarvis were doing it......obviously got the contract down to price and then couldn't carry out operations succesfuly due to the lack of funds. So please Herefordshire Couincil please consider when someone comes in and undercuts everyone else it is false economy and our money you are playing with

Amey have not impressed me over the past few years, have a look at some of the responses on Belmont Voice www.belmontvoice.co.

When Amey took over we were promised they would deliver "savings in excess of £1 million per year, together with improved performance and value." Lets ask the questions - have those savings been delivered, where are they and if not, why not. As for improved performance, that’s subjective in the extreme. It seems to me the larger infrastructure projects have been delivered to a good standard (albeit with some eye watering management costs to Amey) but a lot of the day to day stuff, most obviously potholes, have been shoddy to say the least. My hunch is that Amey have had the cream of the bigger projects, and whoever takes over is going to be left with the small fry. Why not bring it back in house?

I think Amey must have made all of their savings by neglecting Churchill Gardens. The grass was 3 foot tall in early June. When they did belatedly turn up all the cut grass was left in big piles to rot. In other parts of town the grass is manicured like a billiard table. And cut grass meticulously collected.

Contrary to the line in your report, Amey staff were told nothing about the loss of the contract, despite meetings with management that very morning.

@William Rudd - It seems they have forgotten basics such as grass cutting as you rightly point out here in Tupsley. My neighbour has had to phone them on the last two occasions to come up here and get it cut. However, if Amey don't win the new contract, there's a possibility that there could be large numbers of redundancies. We don't need more people out of work round here.

@Belmont Voice - do you really have to advertise your website in every post? It's getting rather irritating now. I'm not allowed to advertise my website on here and neither should you.

The standard of grass cutting and weeding of kerbsides on the estates and county roads is dismal. City estates suffer due to different agencies being responsible for separate parts of the estate. Amey do not do it all - various Housing Associations and other bodies are responsible, but tend to pass the buck between one another. Time to get it back in one department and assume responsible for all parts of the estates ie one phone contact point.

Also litter, fly tipping, blocked drains, overgrown trees, overgrown pathways, damaged verges by car parking, black bags put out days before collection and left behind by waste collectors. All functions carried out by different agencies and departments of the council with a lot of time and money wasted telling us why they can't get these things sorted out.

Lets be honest most herefordians view of amey is a Crew cab transit with feet on dash newpaper out and either reading or sleeping only rarely do they get out said van and do something!!!!

What a load of twaddle. Yes they do sit in their crewcabs, it's usually to wait for the rain to stop to carry out their work. Do you mow or strim your grass when it's tipping it down with rain, if you do can I suggest you get a job with Amey as an all weather worker regardless of conditions. Please note: I do not work for them, just an observer!

The queen flew from rotherwas NOT the camp. Amey staff have to fill in risk accessments before they carry out any work on site which means paperwork has to be filled out, maybe they were doing that, they have there break/dinner in the vans maybe they were doing that!! if they seem to be in there for hours then repotr them. Amey is a large company with many dedicated imployees but you will always get some that will take the mick, but please dont judge them all by the poor standard of the few.

Thank you for correcting me Trucking. And I agree with you, In ANY organisations there are BAD apples, looking at Banks, just due to some of those at the top, please dont judge the people on the front counter, who are no doubt targeted, to sell this and that, even though it turns out to be illegal, PPI being a case in hand

I think that you are missing the point here, "They are not doing any work anyway"
This contract should be awarded on merit and NOT just to keep people in work. If this is awarded to another contractor this will create new jobs anyway?
