Council tax rises around Herefordshire

Eighty of the Herefordshire's town and parish councils have put up their precepts – the amounts they add on to the council tax bill – this year, with four of them recording rises of between 100 to 150 per cent.

Those councils recording the biggest rises in their required precepts over 2012 to 2013 are:

  • Allensmore – up to £1,500 from £600 or 150 per cent
  • Bredenbury and District – up to £4,250 from £1,700 or 150 per cent
  • Bosbury and Coddington – up to £10,000 from £4,750 or 110 per cent
  • Avenbury – up to £3,500 from £1,750 or 100 per cent

The lowest rises were recorded by:

  • Ledbury Town Council – up to £266,596 from £265,773 or 0.31 per cent
  • Wellington Heath – up to £7,400 from £7,300 or 1.37 per cent
  • Titley and District Group – up to £3,921 from £3,825 or 2.51 per cent
  • Much Cowarne Group – up to £3,600 from £3,500 or 2.86 per cent/li>

The biggest rise among the town councils was – as revealed by the Hereford Times in January – that of Bromyard and Winslow that took its precept to £168,000 from £141,700 or up 18.56 per cent.

Hereford City Council went up to £734,960 from £712,340 (3.18 per cent).

Herefordshire Council froze its council tax for 2012-13 so the average (band D) property gets a basic bill of £1,205.

The freeze was only made possible by the council accepting the government’s one-off offer to cover the £2.16 million equivalent of a 2.5 per cent rise.
