Landlord back behind the bar of historic pub
8:30am Wednesday 30th May 2012 in News By Lauren Rogers
The owner of one of Herefordshire’s oldest pubs is back behind the bar in time for Hay Festival – but it’s only temporary.
Peter Glover, who made the news when he applied for planning permission to turn the ancient Rhydspence Inn in Whitney on Wye into a private house, is serving locals again after the tenants who took over just three months ago moved on.
“The historic inn was in safe hands of an experienced operator,” said Peter.
“But unfortunately their plans changed and I have now resumed my previous perch after a much needed holiday.”
Peter put forward the controversial plans to convert the 14th Century pub near Hay-on-Wye in early 2011 after months of struggling to sell the business.
It was on the market at £500,000 for more than 12 months.
He shelved the plans when new tenants came forward, but found himself back behind the bar last week.
“With Hay Festival around the corner, I am looking forward to seeing friends both old and new but it is only temporay,” added Peter, who has already lined up new tenants to take over in July.
