May Fair returns to Hereford

THE OPENING ceremony of this year’s Hereford May Fair returns to its usual site after a two-year gap.

It takes place at 3.45pm on May 8 in Cathedral Close for the first time in two years, after refurbishment previously meant it was held elsewhere.

The annual three-day event will see thousands of people join in the festival fun, which includes exciting rides and food stalls as well as the ancient ceremony of wheat offering made by the Mayor of Hereford to the Lord Bishop.

Roads, including Widemarsh Street, St Owen’s Street, King Street and Bridge Street, will be closed between May 7 and the early hours of May 11.

I wonder how many non-Herefordians will start moaning about loss of business this year? If you don't like it go and live somewhere else. The May fair is part of Hereford's history and tradition - so hands off!

Well said, Tim. The May Fair is ingrained in the very fabric of the City's constitution and a true Herefordian will welcome its coming. I'm 30 years old and still love it as do my children. It's part of what being a Herefordian is all about. And yes, those who don't like it can up sticks and find a town with no traditional values or history. Like Milton Keynes or Welwyn Garden City ;)

I personally don't like it 'but' I'm not going to join the 'get it out the city' party...
I'm just going to keep out the city for 3 days
And to those that like it ...

....ENJOY YOURSELVES!!!!

The May Fair existed long before any of these retailers were even alive. Before going into business in the city centre they would've been more than aware of this taking place for three days every May, and if they weren't then it's there fault for not knowing the history and traditions of Hereford

I remember the new manager of Marks and Spencer who had moved to Hereford a few years ago complaining about the May fair. What a cheek that was.

@ William Rudd - Yeah I remember him! He had a right moan about loss of business across the three days. What a pillock! Think he's gone now luckily.
