Sainsbury's Ledbury application turned down by Herefordshire Council

CONTROVERSIAL plans for a new Sainsbury's superstore in Ledbury have been defeated.

Councillors voted 12 to six against the proposal, which would have seen the construction of a 30,000 sq ft superstore and petrol station off Leadon Way, at Herefordshire Council's planning meeting this morning.

Officers had recommended the plan for refusal, citing a loss of employment land and the impact on Ledbury's high street trade as reasons, among others.

Loss of employment land? Wouldn't Sainsbury's be employing people?? Seems a very odd decision, standby for the expensive appeal!

It was neither poetic or justice, for it to be poetic it would have to have contain some sort of poetic device such as the decision being read in a pentameter rhythm or for to be Justice a crime would have had to have been committed .. neither happened as I am aware.

You're right, they would be employing people, but 'employment land' is a specific term for land used for offices, workshops, industry, warehousing and storage. Retail (i.e. shops, superstores etc) isn't included in that.

Employment land? Galebreaker's land is surrounded by retail outlets. To name a few, Homebase, LDA meats, Lock, Stock and Barrel, a plumbing shop, a builders merchants, garages selling tyres etc, a vets selling petfoods and an additional furniture shop that has recently opened.
Surely employment land should be the whole trading estate not just Galebreakers?
