A PAIR of enterprising Hereford hairdressers are going back to their roots by turning from student to teacher.
Since leaving Herefordshire College of Technology and opening a new salon in the Maylord Shopping Centre, young hairdressing entrepreneurs Maylene Nicholas and Tasha Mason have decided to take on students for work experience. Described as “ambitious and focussed” by course tutor Viv Taylor, the pair completed the level three diploma in hairdressing and decided they were ready to make a commitment to a new business having worked as mobile hairdressers while training.
Tasha, who also completed the level three diploma in beauty, said: “Our tutors have been absolutely wonderful and so supportive throughout our training and with our new venture.
“I really can’t fault the course. It really gave me the confidence to push myself to the best of my abilities.
“We’re hoping to be able to give current learners hands-on experience and encourage them to get involved in the industry locally. If they can see what we have achieved from our training then they will see what is possible.”
Tutor Viv Taylor said that although the industry has a glamorous image hard work was needed to be successful.
“Both Tasha and Maylene have worked extremely hard to get where they are today and are an inspiration to our learners.
“They have got there through sheer determination and ambition.
I have no doubt that they’ll be very successful.
“We’re really looking forward to having learners go there for work experience and see the quality service and professionalism of the business” said Viv.
Maylene explained why they wanted to set up a business in Hereford city centre.
“We wanted a more permanent setting and to have the right facilities to offer the best service to clients,” said Maylene.
“Maylord is really accessible so people won’t have to worry about having nowhere to park or how to find us.
“It’s a lovely place to be, everyone is so kind and it’s like a big happy family.
"We aim to offer something for everyone and are lucky to have a lot of space, so we’ve even added a little play area so mums can get a little peace whilst visiting us for treatments.”
