MADLEY glass engraver Nancy Sutcliffe is the inaugural winner of the Watershed Excellence in Art Prize, which was awarded at the opening of the new event space on Hereford's right bank.

Nancy won the prize for her delicately engraved glass pieces, which form part of the permanent collection at the Hay Makers Gallery in Hay-on-Wye. She is also a member of the Guild of Worcester Craftsmen.

A medical and scientific illustrator by training, Nancy diversified to engraving when her family moved to Herefordshire in 1989.

"I've had a great year," Nancy said. "Response to my new work has been really positive."
