A HEREFORD man who has battled cancer since the 1990s is preparing to walk Hadrian’s Wall for charity.

Paul Ferris wants to raise £10,000 for Cancer Research by walking the 84 miles from Carlisle to Wallsend.

More than a dozen friends and family will join the 57- year-old, of Campbell Road, on Sunday.

Mr Ferris wants to “prove a point” after surgeons removed tumours from both his lungs last August and November. He was first diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease in 1992 and has since been treated for carcinoma and skin cancer.

“At the moment I’m not too bad but I’ve been actively fighting cancer since the early 1990s,” said the programme manager.

“I thought I had two options – either sit in the corner and stare at the wall or enjoy life and fight it.

Hadrian’s Wall appealed because it’s long enough to be physically demanding and to prove a point.”

Mr Ferris and his family want to give something back to Cancer Research and have already raised nearly £5,000.

He has walked parts of the Wye Valley and Offa’s Dyke in preparation and wants to reach the North Sea by June 4. His bid was backed by Hereford’s outgoing mayor, Councillor Anna Toon, who joined their collection in High Town last Saturday.
