ENGLISH Heritage has given one of its largest ever donations in a bid to save a historic Herefordshire Church.
The £680,000 grant will go towards the restoration of Grade 1 listed Shobdon Church, famed for its early Gothic revival interiors.
The building’s structural timber work is in a bad state coupled with rotting wall plates which have led to the parapets tilting inwards.
Despite the funding, more money is required to save the picturesque church.
“Shobdon is one of our great Herefordshire churches, a star of our wonderful built heritage,” said James Hervey-Bathurst, chair of the World Monuments Fund Britain, a charity dedicated to the preservation of endangered historic sites.
“Places like Shobdon attract visitors to our county, and it must be saved.”
Everything from concerts to antiques roadshows have been held to raise funds.
