PEOPLE living in a Hereford suburb fear a child could be killed if cars continue to speed down a nearby road.

Since the opening of the new Rotherwas Access Road, many people have said that Watery Lane is being used as a “rat run” for drivers wanting to get onto Holme Lacy Road.

Sian Williams, from nearby Warwick Road, has launched a petition for either an access-only sign to be put up in the lane or for traffic calming measures to be installed after her cat was run over and killed.

“We found him in a small stream which runs alongside the lane,” she said.

“My son also had his cat knocked over by a car, but luckily it wasn’t killed.

“What if a car hit a child? All I ask is that an access-only sign is put up either side of the lane or a speed ramp is placed directly in line with the entrance.”

Angela Ford claims the lane can at times be like a racetrack and it is not always possible to see what is coming.

“I have seen coaches go down there before and you always have to be cautious,”

she said. “The nearby park is the nearest for a lot of kids in Lower Bullingham to play, so many of them have to use the lane to get there.”

Michelle Morgan, customer services manager for Amey, said it took residents’ concerns seriously and that Watery Lane was subject to a traffic count prior to the opening of the Rotherwas Access Road.

“If it is believed that traffic volumes have increased, a further traffic count will be organised to establish any change in usage,” she said.

“A representative from Amey would be happy to meet residents to discuss their concerns.”
