St John's Ambulance Badger Scheme in Kington could be forced to close

A KINGTON youth club could close this autumn because of a lack of volunteers.

At least three are needed if the St John’s Ambulance Badger scheme is to continue after the summer holidays.

Around six children aged five to 10 currently learn subjects including healthy eating, community awareness issues and basic first aid during weekly meetings at Parish House.

But the charity’s local youth leader recruitment officer Rob Moore says low numbers combined with the departure of an existing volunteer in September could spell the end if no-one else comes forward.

“You’ll often hear the response “join a youth club” when young people complain of having nothing to do, but the truth is there just aren’t the adult helpers required for the young people that want to get involved,” Rob said.

As a result St John’s has recently revamped its recruitment process - which has proved fruitful in other areas of the county - to make it easier for those willing to get on board.

Rob said: “We realise the process could be quite daunting for people who’ve got no experience, so we’ve made every effort to ensure that we help new volunteers with their paperwork and offer all the necessary training for people who want to get involved.”
