BERYL Newnham claimed a winning double at Ross-on-Wye when she posted an excellent 83-15-68 to carry off both the Needham Cup and the Muriel Button Trophy, competitions played in conjunction with each other.

The Ladies' Open Days are so popular that they run two on consecutive days, a silver division open and a bronze open. q Mavis Peplow became the Leominster ladies club champion when she completed the 36-hole competition in a gross 177, six shots clear of runner-up Bett Hinchliffe. Pauline Webb won the nett competition with 144, four shots clear of Margaret Pitt. Webb's morning round of 88-20-68 also gave her the silver medal prize, with Yvonne Hopson claiming the bronze with 100-24-76.

The ladies' team ended all square with two wins each when they entertained their Burghill Valley counterparts.

q Jane Burgoyne posted 31 stableford points to take Kington Ladies' Past Captains' Trophy, a point clear of runner-up Gill Lloyd, who pipped Janet Pennell on a card countback.

Angela Wilkes and Rob Pritchard were comfortable winners of the Vic Haylings Trophy, a mixed foursomes medal. They posted a 82-11-70, with Jenny and Jim Kelly taking second place with 88-14-74, and Ian and Priscilla Scott third on 99-22-77.

Assistant junior organiser Diana Kemp set a good example to her junior flock when she and her partner Graham Vaughan accumulated a fine 47 stableford points to win the Lyonshall Open. They finished four points clear of runners-up Pam and Nigel Layton, who were a further three points ahead of Jane and Peter Burgoyne.

q Belmont ladies' captain Viv Jury was in fine form as she clocked up 42 stableford points to win the Blake's Away Day Trophy at Builth Wells. She was followed home by Hilary Hall with 37 points, Martha Norton on 35, and Joan Skyrme with 32.
