FOR 10 years Ron Davies was one of the masterminds behind the famous Herefordshire fundraiser Jailbreak.

Jointly with police colleague, Grenville Smith, he planned and staged 11 tough events in which more than 5,000 people took part.

They raised over £1 million and most of the money was donated to cancer related causes.

Both Ron and Grenville received the MBE for their efforts.

Two years ago Jailbreak was concluded and last July Ron retired as an inspector from Hereford police after 30 years service.

But now he is back in the news with a warning that he is after people's money again.

Determined

Ron has been appointed fund manager for Herefordshire Macmillan Cancer Relief and he plans to use the same determination applied to Jailbreak to encourage people to support his new cause.

He says he can think of no better way to use his time than raising money for the Macmillan charity to help and support the victims of cancer and their families.

It is not just money for nurses but for a wide range of financial and other support services they give to those affected by the disease.

He was drawn to planning Jailbreak because of his experiences of cancer, with members of his family and many of his friends being caught up in its path.

Ron's task is to raise money to help Macmillan carry out its work all the year round and he says he is looking forward to the prospect of being out and about and meeting people again.

"There are a lot of challenges ahead but Herefordshire is a very generous county and I am sure I will get the right support,'' said Ron.

At the moment he is easing into his new role but there will be no surprises if in the near future he floats a new idea to 'fun raise' money, perhaps aided and abetted with advice from his friend Grenville.

Peter Rowland, with many years' service with Macmillan, will now work as the county organiser, co-ordinating the work of the various branches in the county.

In the meantime anyone who would like to help Ron Davies and Macmillan can phone him on 01432 343030 or write to him at the Macmillan office at 30, Hampton Park Road, Hereford.
