St Nicholas Church in Grosmont awarded £90,800 from Heritage Lottery Fund

GROSMONT parishioners are hoping £90,800 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) might just put things straight.

“The leaning spire of St Nicholas” will soon be no more after restoration work began as part of a £260,000 fund-raising effort to repair roof problems and improve facilities generally.

Rev Dr Jean Prosser said: “The community are working hard to raise match funding and this award is just the encouragement needed to really get the work underway.”

The spire will be partly rebuilt during the first stage of overall renovations, which could finish by the end of the year thanks to the grant.

The next phase will then see the introduction of better community facilities so that the church nave, one of the largest in the region, can be used more widely for receptions and events.

Jennifer Stewart, of Welsh HLF, said: “We are delighted this grant will help secure the future of St Nicholas’ Church, not just as a place of worship, but as a focus for community activity.”

Helping to put things straight are, from left, Jody Marsh, from Capps & Capps, Rev Dr Jean Prosser, architect Stefan Horowskyj and parishioner Martyn Jackson.
