HEREFORDSHIRE has received a multi-million pound boost to help the county move out of recession.

Advantage West Midlands (AWM), the regional development agency, has committed £2.5 million to fund the continuation of the LEADER programme in Herefordshire until 2013.

Herefordshire Voluntary Action’s Reach project will be the first to be boosted by the latest funding. This will see support staff provide help to the county’s voluntary groups.

Matt Smith, of AWM, said the county scheme was the biggest in the West Midlands and was the first to have funding approved.

“LEADER’s extension is fantastic news for the local economy and will be just one of the ways we help the region move out of recession and prepare for the opportunities that will be presented when the economic upturn arrives,”

said Mr Smith.

The scheme includes encouraging enterprise, filling skills gaps and maintaining the distinctive nature of the countryside.

The LEADER scheme is designed to deliver the Rural Development Programme for England.
