Leominster in Stitches hopes to have record of town history stitched up

A FIVE-year stitchwork project depicting the history of Leominster is underway.

The Leominster in Stitches group hopes the work will be permanently exhibited in the town with some of the embroidery possibly being on show in the soon-to-be refurbished Grange Court.

Group chairman Wendy Rulton says the 20 or so members are looking forward to the project.

She said: “We already have a good number of people to sew but we are still in need of more sewers and more people who can draw.” Local schools are also encouraged to take part.

The embroidery will depict the town’s history dating back to AD 660 when monks first arrived in the area.

It will feature notable events including the Battle of Mortimer’s Cross.

The stitching will vary in technique as the work passes through the centuries.

A grant has already been received from Leominster Town Council while The Framing Gallery in the town’s Corn Square will also help out.

The group meets each Monday between 2pm and 4pm at Leominster’s Age Concern centre off West Street.

Sponsors are also required for the project. Anyone wishing to help should contact Wendy on 01568 620506.
